2008 wheels and tires

I have a question about wheel and tire combinations; I like the 18's that come standard on the 2008 GT. The only problem is that there is a lack of traction with this size since I have upgraded the power. My question is what would be the biggest tire that can use on the stock rims 18" x 8" front and back, and which has the best wear and traction. Or is there any rim out there that looks just like the stock rims in a 9" wide size. I don't like the deep dish look and that is all I have found so far.

dont know what what size tire is on there at the moment but I know 275's will fit on a 8" wide wheel.

A 275 will fit but I wouldn't recommend running a road course with them on there. 265 width tire will probably be your best bet. I'd be willing to bet a set of drag radials in your factory size will probably get the job done however.

Re: 2008 wheels and tires

I am 95% certain that the 18" wheels on S197 Mustang are 18 x 8.5", not 8" wide...That being said, I have seen as big as a 295 shoe-horned onto them for autox purposes...

As far as "how wide is too wide?" is concerned, it's really dependent on what aspect ratio you are to go with and how stiff the tire side-walls are...If you have a wide tire with a low aspect ratio (i.e. short side walls), they will be significantly stiffer and harder to mount on a rim...As far as street use goes, I wouldnt put anymore than a 275 on those stock rims...There is a direct trade-off between traction and tire wear...The "stickier" the tires, the softer the compound and therefore the shorter their lifespan...

That being said, the type of tire you go with will depend on what type of "traction" you are wanting? We need a little more information on what you seek...Do you want straight-line traction or grip for handling? Also, how aggressive do you want to do with traction for track vs. daily street use?

Re: 2008 wheels and tires

The Chrome rims are 18 x 8.5 but the polished aluminum rims are only 18 x 8 which is what I have with the standard 235/50 18's. Since I have supercharger my car they are far from adequate. I do like the style of the existing rims and could go larger to the 8.5 chrome but they are very expensive from Ford. This is my daily driver and I was trying to get the best handling for all purposes with good tire wear. I appreciate any and all help
