I am looking to install new wheels to my 2004 Mustang 3.9L V6, but I am unsure of what size to buy. Right now, I have brand new (Thus, I am not going to replace them for the purpose of new wheels) 16 inch Nexen N5000 tires on the factory wheels. So my question is.... what size wheel do I need to buy to fit the factory size tires? I was looking at 16x8 but I think that is too big.
The better question is going to be what size are the tires. Factory size on a 04 V6 is 225/55-16. If this is the size you have bought I would suggest not going over a 7 inch wide wheel.
To be honest, I was in this position several years ago with my V6 and decided to just wait on wheels until I needed tires the next time. I was able to concentrate on other areas of the car and got a killer deal on a set of wheels after shopping around for a while. I would recommend just riding on what you have now until they wear out and buy what you want then.
Thank you so much for the help. I've been looking around everywhere for the answer and I had yet to find it, so your help is much appreciated.
I think my parents (I am in my teens) are trying to talk me into waiting till the tires need replacing, to switch out the wheels. But, changing the wheels was something I really wanted to do to add to the car.... But it probably would be best to wait, I suppose. Thanks for he input.
If you decide on a style of wheel that you like, I'd keep an eye out for deals on sets...they are out there. Sometimes the rims alone can be had for a steal, then you can always save up and put tires on after the stock ones wear out.
The stock rims aren't greatly desired, so if you sell them, don't expect a huge return.
That's why I just kept my stockers as spares, and I put them on when I store the car for winter.
Wheels drastically change the appearance of the car (for the better) so if you come across a sweet deal on wheels, I'd try and get them. The only aftermarket 16inch wheels I've seen are the 95 Cobra R style rims (16x8)...
Thanks for the reply! Im having a very hard time finding wheels that I want in that size, so I might just have to wait and buy a set of wheels and tires. Im really hoping I can find black wheels, as the car is white and Im blacking everything out. Thanks again for the reply!
I too have been looking for aftermarket 16" rims, if for no other reason the price on tires is cheaper and i'm a cheap ass. But have found none, so if you find any, let me know. Even in 17" there isn't a ton of options. To hell with this "ricer" crap of putting 20" rims or bigger on every car around.
There are TONS of ford brand wheels out there in 17s and 18s for quite cheap. Do not buy anything but 17s or 18s... let me repeat that one more time. Do not buy anything but 17s or 18s.
Rims will run you about 100-150 each (depending but should not be over 200 each for a nice ford rim or knock off ford rim) then tires.. thats the kicker. For 17s about 500 a set for 18s 800-1000 a set.
Then lower the car and the car will be 100% different. The right rims/drop makes ALL the difference.
buy a 17x8 inch rim with 245/45/17 inch tires. That will work perfect. You must be careful wtih how the rim fits though, you want them to have about 5 in back spacing~ so 3 inch of rim stick out of the front~ or there about.
Guys, please don't quote the guy spamming links all over the site...
