Would I be able to fit 16 or 17 in wheels on a 15 inch tire?

I'm looking to buy new wheels for my car - Not tires - I can't afford both but, I have a 2000 V6 mustang with 15 inch tires - I was wondering if I would be able to fit 16 or 17 inch wheels on my 15 inch tires or would I be required to get 15 inch wheels?

Also, how can I find out what the width of my tires/wheels are so I can buy the correct wheels?

I looked over the front of my wheel but wasn't able to find anything that stated the width of it.

I am confused about this but need some info about this that will help me understand what I can do/buy to make my car look really cool!!

Your limited to only 15" tires. Go to tirerack.com they may be able to tell you your stock rim size.

sometimes you can go a lil over or under on width but never rim size. I wanted to do the same thing when i wanted rims. your better off saving until you can buy both.

In my opinion, wait until you need new tires and just buy the rims and tires then. That way you wont be buying tires twice like i did. Also, I wouldnt get something as small as a 16 inch rim. Id go 18 if you can afford the tires or 17 at least. They may be heavier, but its a v6 anyway. Its not meant to be fast.

Re: Would I be able to fit 16 or 17 in wheels on a 15 inch tire?

You are basically limited to 15" wheels with those tires. They are too narrow to fit on a 16" rim.

You can pick up a set of 16" 5 spoke or 17" bullitt mustang wheels with tires on craiglist for cheap if you just want bigger factory mustang wheels.

Or you can save up a bit more and buy some aftermarket wheels/tires. Good deals can be had on craigslist and forums. Wheels really make a mustang, so do some research and find a style you like...there are tons out there.

Here's a chart of most of the wheels offered from the factory for the mustangs (except the cobras):

Re: Would I be able to fit 16 or 17 in wheels on a 15 inch tire?

Was that really a serious question? 15" tires can only go on 15" wheels and so on and so forth. Better bet for you is to wait and buy w wheel and tire combo. Try stretching a 15" tire over a 16" wheel and watch with how much force that ***** will blow up in your face . I really am glad you asked us before you asked a tireshop. I don't think they would of stopped laughing

come on dude - give me a break - here's the deal on why i asked the question - i had spoken w/ a friend bout buyin new wheels - he told me i should upgrade to get bigger wheels but said i could get 16 or 17 in wheels if i kept the same width as the ones i had now which to me didn't make any sense, so, i figured to make sure, i'd ask someone on here - i was just curious if it was possible to go any bigger w/ the size tires i have.

oh n to whomever else posted that i should wait to get the combo tires/wheel set when my tires die on me, that sounds like a great idea...... however, the tires i currently have on are 80,000 mile tires and i only go around 3,000 miles a year in this one car meaning i'd have to wait many many more yrs to replace em.

Well, I would wait and look around to make sure you get the ones you want. 16 in is a waste of time in my opinion. So, take some time and look at pics of other cars and choose the style and color you want so you dont kick yourself later on. Also, make sure you get good pics of the rims if you buy them used although I would go with new ones if possible.

Dude I was just giving you a hard time. I've been in the auto industry since 2001. Just never heard anyone ask the orginal question you asked so I had to poke a bit of fun. O and the 80,000 mile rating is only under absolute perfect conditions. More so that rating is for warranty against defects. Your tires will never make it to 80k in good shape. More than likely they will dry rot or wear out WAY before then. For you to get even close to 80k you would have to have all air pressures checked every week, Rotate tires every 5000 miles, have then aligment in perfect spec, suspension in perfect working order, so forth and so on

To us 16" may seem like a waste of time, but if you've seen the 15" rims that came on v6 mustangs in 94-98 and 99-00, the 16" 5 spokes are a dream. Plus I think the brushed aluminum 5 spoke rims don't look that bad if the car is dropped and you stick some wheel spacers in the rear.

Of course 17" or 18" are the best options, but if you can't find a used set with decent tires (shouldn't be hard these days) or you only want to spend a couple hundred for wheels/tires, they aren't that bad.

Well I was saying that more if he was gonna go with a brand new rim/tire package. Ive seen bullit wheels on sale used all the time.

You wouldnt be able to tell, as long as the overall diameter of the wheels/tires doesnt change.

However, the wheels usually are heavier. This will affect performance. I carry these big *** 10.5" rims with 315's around in the summer weather...the car is definitely more sluggish at times with them on, it's mostly due to a lack of gears and tlok. But then I don't race around anywhere, so I'm not too worried, they're mainly for looks.

Yea they definately slow the car down big time. Id spin the tires like crazy when I had my old rims and tires on with the 4.10s. Not as much with the 18's. But hey, its a v6 anyway. Its not made for all out power. Just get the rims that appeal to you the most.

dont settle when it comes to rims, if you cant afford what you want just save up until you can. Generally on 99-04 mustangs 17s look fine, but 18s is the sweet spot overall (but heavier and tires cost more)

Keep in mind Mustang rims are CHEAP compared to GM and the like, you can get a nice 17 inch Mustang rim new for 100 bucks each in 17 inch sizes, used even less. The tires for 17s are about 100 each~

Exactly what i was thinking. I dont even bother looking for high milage tires for my bike they usualy rot out before i even get thru a sticky tire.

A nice set of cobras, 18". Rims mean everything man. Dont settle for " well thats not bad"... Save up and get a sick set.

* Can anyone second me on this one though. I use to work in a tire shop and 18 " rims wouldnt fit on his style stang when i tried to install them. Kept rubbing in the front. Did ne one else have that problem?

18x9's should fit now problem...I'm sure there is some slight rubbing at full lock, but not to the point where the car can't be driven. 18x10s in the front are another story...anyone who tries it is in for a rude awakening.

Also, 18" rims specifically for mustangs should have no problems, the backspacing and offset is for the mustangs...some random 18" wheel may have issues, if it would even fit.

Anything over 9" in the front will not work. I rub a little bit at full lock with 245's on my 17x9" bullitts. 275's would rub slightly more. So it depends on the tire as well.
