18" wheels, what size tires??

I just bought some 18" ADR wheels (front-18X8.5 and rear-18X9.5) for my 97 mustang, but i'm not too sure what size tires i need to put on my car without worry of rubbing or anything. Also i want them to look good, not too big or anything. Anyone got any idea what i might nee??

What size are the wheels?

18x7, 8, 9, 10

This will be the biggest thing to look at on tire size.

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

265/35/18s for the front and 295/35/18 or 305/30/18 for the rear.

normally you run a 275 on a 9 inch but since you have an 8.5 a 265 would work great and overall its the right height. For the rear a 295 will probably be the best bet but a 305 works a bit better when you do the math (but not much difference really)

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

there is no point to doing them all the same if you paid the cash for larger rims out back, if you want to do that then send back two of the rims and get the same size all round.

you also wont be able to rotate so you will need to keep an eye on the alignment and adjust as needed. Also keep the air pressure at around 32-34psi to help the tires wear right.

look at yokahoma avs es100s they are a great tire for the money. I hope you have priced some cuz that size tire is quite expensive when you start going abouve a 275/35/18

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

The 94-98s can actually fit a huge wheel out back. A 10.5" wheel with a 315 is pretty standard. I wouldn't go any bigger than 275s on a 9" up front though.

Good call....above is my exact combo and i don't have rubbing issues, even lowered 1.5 inches....so the tire sizes they recomended will work just fine.

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

with a 245 wheel and that width tire, if you go 245 and 225s for tires, expect some serious curb rash, they are WAY too narrow for your car

listen to these guys when they tell yea to go bigger for the wheels, even if it means you need to get spacers, otherwise, you are going to be spending even more time and money trying to replace the wheels that you have because they got screwed. those size tires that you want are no good for your wheels--spend the extra money and get good tires.

What ever, That would be like me saying your car was 6" to tall with your 17's without seeing it in person. I was just telling the guy what worked for me.

Go for it....it'll look nice and you can stuff a bigger tire on there....295, 305, 315 on a 10" wide rim would be the right size

I think she was just saying that is a narrow tire for a 9.5 inch wheel. I'm running 275/35-18's on my 18x9 wheels with a very small bit of rubbing at full lock (just avoid it) and I'm lowered a little over 1.5.
The normal recommendation for a 9 or 9.5 inch wide tire is at minimum 265 and to give you a comfortable margin 275 width. You could probably squeeze a 295 on a 9.5 pretty easily but you wouldn't want to do a road course on that.

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

Generally speaking, the "rule of thumb" to go by when buying tires is that you buy a tire that is 1 inch wider than the rim...so if you have an 8.5" wide wheel, you need at least a minimum of a 245 and for the 9.5" wheel, you need at least a 265...Those are considered minimum tire widths...I would personally go a little bigger than just +1...I would say the minimums for me would be 255 and 275...

Also, another thing that will determine your tire size is the overall diameter of the wheel and tire combined...For my car, an 05 GT, Ford decided to be retarded and go with a strange stock tire size, so in order to go with an 18x9 in the front and 18x10 in the back, My tires sizes are 255/45 front and 285/40 rear in order to maintain the stock overall diameter...

Re: 18" wheels, what size tires??

I feel so retarted asking so many questions, but im just totally clueless and my friend keeps telling me that certain things wont work, but i'm just like hey they know what they're talking about they are the mustang people. lol. he drives a like 95 Eagle Talon, so ya i'm just trying to make dang sure i get the right sizes and don't have to worry about anything, and i'm just really broke and don't have the money to gettoo crazy, so i'm trying to find a range of what'll work and still look good, but i still could go bigger and be better later on. So thanx

that would probably be the worst descision you will ever make with regard to your car. a 245 on a 9.5 would look like pure **** no matter how nice the rims are. a 225 on an 8.5 would as well. I'd rather have stock wheels on than tires that don't even come close to the edge of the rim. I know you don't really know...not tryin to be a jerk..but seriosly, DON'T DO THAT. Listen to these guys. A 275 is the minimum of the range you should put on the 9.5, mine are dead even and look fine. Size the tires right, their size is as important as the wheel imo.

275/35/18's are good. They maintain the radius (extremely closely) so you won't need to recalibrate the speedo or anything. With 255's i think you'd need 40 or 45.....there is some size calculator thing i saw back in the day but i don't have the link..it shows the radius changes with different sized tires. Maybe somebody has it cause that would help you out.

Don't listen to talon man if he's telling you these won't fit. Most people here know b/c WE'VE DONE IT. I can tell you from personal experience that on a 99-04 stang a 275mm wide tire up front will probably rub at full lock but it is so easily avoided and so not a big deal, it doesn't matter. In the back, you have a long way to go before running into trouble.
