01 GT, i have the factory Builltt wheels on, and i need tires. Current factory size is 245/45/17.
My plan is to eventually get 03-04 Cobra wheels (17x9?), what size tire can i get that would fit on my current wheels, and still work if i put Cobra wheels on? Im not trying to fit a bigger tire necessarily, but something that would fit either wheel, if possible. Or maybe the stock size would work fine for both?
My .02, theyre street tires, i burn them all of anyways, so i normally go with stock sizes and middle of the road tires. Dont like to dump money into better tires if i dont need them.
17x9 cobra wheels require a 275/40/17 which will work on your stock wheels but it will be a tight fit~ do NOT (I repeat do NOT) go any smaller than a 275/40/17 unless you like the look of a stretched tire.
well define "same" its probably not identical to what you have not but its close
you can figure out the backspacing very easily. Measure the back where it mounts to the car to the back edge of the rim (straight out) and compare to yours should be very close to the same. Fit should be about identical.
i cant think of any reason why they just wont bolt right up, even the tire size is the same on 94-04.
They are made to clear the 13 inch cobra brakes so on a GT I dont see it being a problem. I tried to google a 99-04 with them but came up with nothing.
Yeah, you'll want the lug nuts to match the wheel for sure. American Muscle has lug nuts and they have a very easy wheel/tire section to browse and provides any fitment questions and pictures too.
American muscle doesnt sell that wheel, and they dont know much about it...
Do the lug nuts go over the center cap? Meaning, can you take the lugs off and on without removing the cap? Ive never actually seen these wheels in person, and the information on them is vague.
I have my factory "capped" lug nuts. Not sure if there is a better name for them... Im thinking i need an "un-capped" acorn style lug nut for these wheels/caps.
255-40s or 275-40s will work on either ones. Will bulge out alittle more on the stock rims, but will fit the cobra wheels perfect. Could even go with 315-35s on the rear ones will fit but bulge out.

The tires that were on my stock wheels were 245/45/17, and mis matched. So i didnt reuse them. I had an OLD set of 245/45/17 BFG KDWS in the back room of my shop. I threw those on for now. They have an OK amount of tread, but are getting pretty dry rotted... Kinda scaring me.
Im just going to buy new tires, probably very soon. Ill either do 255/40 or 275/40. Still afraid the 275's will bulge too much, on my 17x8 wheels... Anyone have pics with a setup like that?
Problem is youre running a bigger rim, and smaller series tire, which would compensate for the larger tread.
I went with the stock size. Better for burnouts. If i want to hook up, ill run drag radials, once this sled is making respectable power.
