Wheel offsets

Sorry for the noob question but I've never quite understood the offset for wheels; IE 35mm, 44mm and such. do you have to buy wheels WITH a specific offset or can it be adjusted?

Does it even matter and you can just slap any wheel on?

The higher the the offset the more the wheel will be tucked inside the fender. The less the wheel offset the more it will stick out.

+1 on what he said... If you get wheels from AM or LMR in your cars year category then they will already have the offset right to fit your car, so you won't need to worry about that.

Now obviously wider wheels will stick out from the fender more.
