MT82 Drag Setup.

I'm fairly new running at the track..I go around once a month & I'm trying to get some wheels to use at the track & I understand I want bias ply tires for the manual tranny. I wanna just get some rear bias ply tires to throw on but I'm hearing that it's not recommended to run bias ply's in the back with street tires up front is that true? I really don't want to have to get front runners as well as rear wheels/tires. Is there any other options I have? Will running a drag radial with the MT82 be another huge no-no?
Thanks for any info guys!

I have read we should not, but I will just say....
I have hundreds of passes on MT drag radials on my old GTO with the T-56 with zero issues. Well, zero issues with the tranny. Grenaded a half shaft once on street tires tho!! I plan on getting a set of DRs for my Mt-82 tracpac soon. Good luck.

I would much rather get bias ply radials but I heard it's bad to run them w/o bias ply's up front! I'm thinking maybe some DRs & just take it easy on the launch idk.

Anyone know what's the issue with running bias ply tires out back & street tires up front??

I'm not a drag racer and don't have any experience with bias ply tires first hand. But I don't see why it would be bad to run bias ply in the rear and regular up front.

Bias ply is correct. Shifting that MT82 above 6500 will be your biggest issue. About 30% of the time it just won't shift. Ford did put a fuel shut off to save the deal so have at it and good luck. What you'll really notice is the lack of pull in 2nd gear. It's a tiny engine. Needs about another 50 lb. ft. of torque.

Yea I don't see what the issue could be either. I read something about the bias ply sidewall & street tire sidewalls being different & causing the car to lose control? I don't know of that's right tho that's what I'm trying to figure out!

So there's no issues running street tires up front & slicks out back?

No. I do not run them on the highway at 80+ though.

They are strictly for dig nights.

Ah ok. That's what I'm trying to find out! If I can run my regular street tires up front & throw some slicks or bias ply tires when I go to the track! I heard it wasn't recommended to do that, u've never had any issues?

I have a chance to get some cheap 16 wheels. Would a 26 in tire (above) work good with my 3.31 gears??

I ran 17" M/T et street bias ply tires with my OEM front radials with zero issues. The sidewall on the 17" (or 16" that you're considering) isn't enough to cause much wobble...

26" M/T et street bias or Hoosier QTP bias are the way to go. I managed 1.65 60' times (with ~100 less HP than you)
