Widest tire for 20x8.5?

I'm thinking of going with AM's 2013 GT500 style charcoal wheels in just a few weeks. They somehow no longer offer a staggered setup in this wheel!
All I can get is a square setup, 20x8.5 and the tire package is 255/35/20. I really wanted a staggered setup with 10" rear and I could still get that in a different wheel choice but I prefer the GT500 style in charcoal.
So...
What's the widest tire I could mount on that 20x8.5 on the rear on a 14 non lowered GT?
I don't race, track or otherwise need extreme performance, just looks and a relatively safe setup for daily driving. Do you think AM would sell me this set but actually put a pair of wider tires on two of the wheels? Certainly not 285's like the 10" has but 275? 265?

As recommended by most tire mfrs: 255/35

That's what I'm thinking also but wanted some opinions. I may end up going with the AMR charcoal 20 staggered set. Then I would have 285/30/20 on the rear. I just think a 255/35/20 rear would look really skinny.

Your car will look weird if you put 2 different tire sizes on all 8.5" rims. I did this before....trust me. I've put 275's on 8.5" rims & had no problems with it. Personally, I'd look for a staggered set up if you want wider tires on the back. I just traded in my 08 for a 14 & my 08 had 10" rims in back w/ 325's & 8.5" in front with 255's & it looked awesome!!!
They were Foose Nitrous F-117 Rims. I wish I would have asked if I could swap the wheels when I did the trade but didn't. Stupid me!!!

If you want an option....do like I did on my 14, I bought a set of GT500 take offs and never looked back...although they are not 10" wide rears they are 9.5".
8.5" width is just too small for my taste as the fronts were 9" with 265/40-19's and the rear were 285/35/20's

I've been trying to find a set of real GT500 take offs on eBay, this forum and also another Mustang forum but the only set I have on my watch list right now is listed at $1800 and they look like ****! Curbed, chips and gouges! I have about 3 weeks left before I buy so I'm still hoping a set will pop up that's more reasonable.
In the meantime...I'm starting to warm up more on the looks of the AMR charcoal staggered set. They do actually really look good on this car, especially a black one like mine and I know many many people also have them but I'm in the extreme NE where there are few Mustangs, let alone other ones with AMR wheels.
Your wheels and quad exhaust looks really good!

When I finally decided on the GT500 take offs I called Shelby in Las Vegas and we cut a deal...they sent me pictures and even though they had about 4k miles on them they looked perfect. The only downside are the tires....the Goodyear's are great in warm weather but in rain they are just short of dangerous.
I was thinking of just widening my Brembo wheels to 10" in the rear...although it would have cost $350 a piece....in hindsight I wish I would have done that.
