Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

you can do a GT catback but you will need to get an adaptor to and convert your Y pipe (two pipes from headers going into one pipe) to an H pipe (like a GT has) so it will bolt up or get a shop to fab up the connection. I would just want to be able to unbolt it when needed.

With that said there are tons of ways to do it. You can buy a GT take off exhaust catback and buy some mufflers and have them welded on or you can buy a full catback, or just have a full one custom made.

Stay away from chrome tips and go with stainless pipe only (you can get polished stainless tips for a good price0

How expensive would that be? And what brand of exhaust would give me the best sound?

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

I have the pypes street pros on mine right now. I personally haven't heard any other exhaust with the exception of borla/bassani that was deeper at idle on the 3.8 v6.
I've heard flowmaster, magnaflows, and cherrybombs, and they weren't as deep. The street pros have a higher pitched race sound towards the higher rpms, so they're not deep higher up, though most exhaust systems aren't on a v6.

But...its ultimately up to you, whatever you like, listen to some clips online or some actual cars if you can to help you decide.

The cheapest way is as Spec said, buying a GT take-off, and welding in your choice mufflers. Last guy I knew that did it was able to do it for around $300. He got everything off forums and locals. A full catback can get pricey, since the adapter is $100, and catback systems range from $300~500+.

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

^Holy ****, that is cheap, last time I looked at Borlas systems they were close to $600!

That system looks like it attaches to the stock y-pipe though, he might not want that.

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

Thanks for your help guys. One more thing though. this has nothing to do with exhaust but my switches on the driver side have gone out. The locks work just fine, but when i need to roll my windows up or down, i have to open my door. I have no clue what is wrong with it or where i should look first. Any ideas?

if you get a bolt on cat back (not true dual exhaust) or you make it true dual its not a huge difference in the end result

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

^I wouldn't do an offroad x-pipe. A sixer's tone gets high enough past 3000rpms with cats, it would sound nasty that loud w/o cats. A quieter, more mellow sounding sixer is the way to go.

I agree. Although, a sixer with MAC longtubes, MAC o/r x pipe and flowmaster 40's dumped sounds really nice.

I suppose the dumps bounce the noise off the ground giving it a deeper sound. Not a bad idea.

Cool Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

I'm in the same boat, i'm about to buy a 2000 Stang with a v6 not sure what i'm gonna do first. Might be tires and rims i dunno really. Kinda wanna go for a cold air intake too tho that is probably what i will shoot for first better proformance from the intake. Any good feedback on first things to do is always nice hit me back people.

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

Well, if you go with a CAI, you can get a Bombz CAI from ebay and it'l work just as good as a K&N. Rims and tires, that's left up to you as a personal preference. A CAI was the first thing I did to my 2k stang when I first got it.

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

i built my own exhuast for just under $400. Mac longtubes straight into magnaflows and dumped. no cross or h. sounds damn good. might consder this if your lookin to do exhaust first. but rear end gears made the biggest difference to me. well worth the $$$

Re: 2000 v6. what should I do first?

This is probably a stupid question, but when you say "dumped," you talking about bending the pipes down right? And if so, could you just get that done at a muffler shop?

Yah, the exhaust travels down and can "dump" with mufflers and turndown tips right before the axle, or go over the axle and dump just after that.

Either way, a short piece of pipe that is connected to the muffler is facing downward towards the ground. It works nice on the v6's with the stock bumper. No need for a GT bumper with the cutouts.

Yes, an exhuast shop should be able to do this no problem, and no, it is not a stupid question, we're all here to learn.
