Check Engine Light

Try to help an old man here. Just got a 01 convertible and put in a tank of gas. Upon starting it up after letting it sit for a couple of days the "check Engine" light lit up. I tried screwing the gas cap until it clicked but the light is still on. What am I doing or what did I do wrong? Is a new gas cap in order or did I purchase a lemon?

Thanks!

Re: Check Engine Light

The check engine light could be a number of things not necessarily lemon; you need to see what codes come back. Hopefully it is as simple as a sensor and not as you stated.

Re: Check Engine Light

Go down to autozone and have them read the code for you. It's free. Then, post up the code here and we will be able to help you much better. Right now we would all just be taking wild guesses.

Re: Check Engine Light

Wow, one thing happens on a used car and you IMMEDIATELY jump to the possible conclusion of it being a lemon? I'd only be worried if you bought it from a shady dealer who may have cleared the codes when you bought it and now they're all coming back.

Re: Check Engine Light

Thanks for all of your advice! Went to autozone and it showed the ERG valve. Can I just clean this or do I need to get a new one?

Again, thanks all for helping!

Re: Check Engine Light

You could try cleaning it with carb cleaner, but they are cheap enough just replace it, it also might be the EGR sensor or the DPFE sensor. Change it then take your battery cable loose for a few seconds to reset your computer and the light should go out.

Re: Check Engine Light

I have purchased one and am waiting to install. I don't know about you but the part cost $45, not cheap on a Padre's salary. Anyway, I did take off the battery cable and when I put it back on the check engine light was off. Do you think that I still need to change the valve or am I home free? Hope does spark eternal

Re: Check Engine Light

When you take the cable off it resets the computer and clears all the codes. When you drive it the light should come back on, due to the faulty EGR. If that was the code that came back that is probably the problem. After you change it reset the computer and that should do it. Good luck.

Re: Check Engine Light

Thank you!

Looks like I have a "little" project tomorrow. Any bets on how many trips I am going to have to make to the auto store?

Thanks for your time and patience,

Padre

Re: Check Engine Light

Also if you have compressed air blow it out after you let the carburetor cleaner work for a little bit, but I think those have a rubber diaphragm and carburetor cleaner is strong stuff. For $45 I would try to clean it myself. Good luck brother it you need anymore help just holler. Peace.
