Long Tube Header - the Good & the Bad?

I've had my 94' V6 (convertible - auto trani) engine rebuilt completely and am considering adding Long Tub Headers while the engine is still out.

Can anyone run down the Pros and Cons for me?

Have never been to worried about that for me. I heard that they are illegal in California. Its stupid but whatever.

I am not really to sure about the differences and i am sure that they are minor at that.

You want the pros and cons of having long tubes? The only con I can think of is that you need a different exhaust setup at together, and it's expensive, everything else about them is better than shorties or your stock ones.

The long and the short of it

for a NA (naturally aspirated) motor, long tubes will give you more torque over the powerband. Short tube headers have more gains with a blower/turbo setup. My V6 is going to use a MAC set of longtubes (my car is a '83 but '98 headers will fit my application) and even if your in a smog state they have the O2 sensor bungs welded in. if you need them they are there. if not, plug 'em

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I plan on replacing the rest of the exhaust.

Pros and cons of after-market H pipe vs. exhaust shop custom?

Can the local exhaust shop give me everything I need at a resonable price or am I losing major performances advantages going the cheaper route. My question is not a question of money, more a question of, is after-market really needed.

OK here is the real deal

PRO's If you are going to seriously mod your car adding long tube headers and h-pipe is the correct way to go. When you do get P&P heads, intakes or power adder your car will be ready!!

CON's If you are not planning on modding the engine, like P&P heads, intakes and Cam or Supercharger you will be wasting your money. The V6 exhaust is more than efficent and save youe money and just get a cat back exhaust system. You will have the mean sound you want!!!

So the choice is yours

No worse than subframe connectors. If you are going to lower your car and add subframes or long tubes you are going to scrape sometimes. If you put on subframes first the headers wont have a chance to scrape!!!!

I didn't think that long tubes cleared the "K" brace under the engine, on verts

i haven't had scraping problems... but then i'm not lowered

can scraping damage the headers? or the engine?

nah, your engine is too high to scrap, even on lowered cars, and I'm sure the headers wouldn't scrap too much either, but sometimes my flowmasters do scrap, but not much.

my buddy scrapes his headers on his 00 GT with a 2 in drop though mall parking lots suck

my cats are the lowest part on the car, maybe equaled by the start of the k member but the cats are pretty darn low, if you can keep em higher than the stock cats your good to go.

I'm now going to be getting long tube headers, and selling my exhaust, the shorties and the O/R h-pipe for something like $200. I think that's hell of a deal if you ask me. I just need the extra scavenging that the long tubes do to help out my engine.

About that guy with the GT dropped 2", anyone who drops any Mustang 2" is asking for trouble and has ruined their handling, not helped it, that is way too low, 1.5 inch is as low as anyone should go unless they are just doing it for looks and don't mind ruining their suspension and their handling.

jet hot is a coating, not a header company.

I have macs that are jethot coated. Help keep exhaust temps up and rust away.
