first off, welcome, second, your probably going to want to give sometype of goal, like "i would like 200 whp for 500 bucks" or something close to that. You'll also wanna say what kinda tranny you got. Just figured id let you know before the other guys get on you about that.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

Thanks for the info and welcome.

Sorry I'm not the greatest with mechanics.

Just audio.

I have an auto trans.

And I have about 200$ to spend.

How much would gears cost me or a shift kit or w/e I need.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

I knew it probably wouldn't.

I just got a new job though, so I'll have more money soon.

Could I get a CAI for 200?

A decent one?

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

I've found gears for my car for around 189.00.

Would these be worth it?

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

It won't give you an noticable power. Not worth the 200 dollars if you are looking for power. Just save up for gears and install.

Install on gears is what gets you, not the cost of the gears.

My dad's best friend owns a service center.

I don't have to worry about the cost of install.

Just gears.

If you do gears you will want to get a tlok to go with it. Since the install = the same procedure.

also to add, jeep called thier limited slip trac-lok too. fyi, the carrier can installed after the gaer install. the carriere install just requires resetting of backlash. pinion depth is the same. gear install is labor intensive, thats why i likE doing gears for people. i charge 250 per axle

Before you forget about cost of install realize its about a 400 dollar install and he might want something for it unless they are really really close freinds. Also remember you'll need bearings to go with it which an install kit is about 75 bucks.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

Gears/tlok are your best bet for better acceleration and launches.
Just remember to get gears and a tlok for a 7.5inch rearend. That is the v6 rear, the 8.8inch is the v8, it will not fit.

+1 on the install kit

I've heard good things about the frpp gears, not too much about the motive gears.
Maybe someone else can chime in regarding those.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

Get a shorter belt that eliminates the air conditioning unit, and also an underdrive pulley. Check out this article, they get a 4.0 to hit 13.9 in the quarter with bolt ons and then they get it to hit 12.8 with a 75 wet shot for about $600 from ZEX... That's GT500 territory

2005 Ford Mustang V6 - Zex S197 Nitrous Kit - 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords Magazine

The article starts off with the nitrous info but on the last page they talk about how it ran 13.9 while still NA

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

Welcome I'm new on this site also and first mustang... follow these steps should really help you with your add ons and look in american muscle.com for good quality and great prices.. I hope this helps.....

Stage 1
Dual Exhaust (2.25" for Naturally Aspirated Cars and 2.5" for Blown Cars and some big NA strokers)
Rear End Gears & Traction-Lok (3.73 for Manual & 4.10 for Automatic)
Cold Air Intake
Underdrive Pullies
Short Throw Shifter (5-Speed) or Shift Kit (Automatic)

Stage 2
Torque Converter (Automatics)
Suspension Upgrade (Lowering Springs, Shocks & Struts, Rear Sway Bar and Strut Tower Brace).
Throttle Body (94-98) with crossover tube matching.
Custom Burned Chip, but most do not need this until Stage 3.

Stage 3
Ported and Polished Upper Intake, Lower Intake & Heads
Custom Ground Camshaft
Pushrods and Springs
Ignition System (Only needed if Forced Induction or Nitrous is used)
Fuel System Upgrades (190/255 lph fuel pump, bigger injectors & adjustable fuel pressure regulator)
Custom Chip necessary at this level for max power! Usually worth at least 10-15 RWHP and mucho low end torque.

Stage 4
Built 3.8 or 4.2L Engine (big bore best )
Supercharger, Turbocharger, Nitrous
Forged Internals (sic) Forged rods and pistons are a good idea.
MAF (all years) and TB (99^) stock MAF is adequate before this.
And now a comment on how mods work together, from an old post
I made a while back.

What ever the last major mod is will
seem like the missing link... That means that if you do all but the cam, then
decide to do the cam, it will seem like the cam added the most HP. But a cam
alone is good for maybe 15 HP on unported heads/intakes, (not SPI though!)
but it would add maybe 25-30 if changed last. All the mods work together...
the stock cam will hold back the porting and unported heads/intakes will limit
the HP produced by a cam swap. (SPI is a great candidate for unported heads
and new cam, the stock head flow is awesome!)

It is well worth it to change the cam! Also easier to do when you have the
heads off there, as most of the junk that you remove for a cam swap is
removed when you take off the heads. But you can change a cam with the
heads on, and the engine stays in the car too. Check out the shop manual on
this procedure.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

dude, if your lookin for best bang for the buck, I gotta agree with iamdat. I suggest gutting your car. gut your back seat, everything in your trunk, your front and back bumper supports, and if you go to the track jerk your passenger seat out. All these are easy simple basic things to take out and are reversable. These are good for about 150lbs or so. every 10lbs removed is a theoretical 1hp gained. every 100lbs is a .1 gained on the track.

Re: Noticable power & speed increase for cheap?

I don't recomend removing bumper supports if this is your daily driver. They're there for a reason. I'd prefer to be safer then be a tenth quicker in the 1/4.
