temp. guage question

i think my temperature guage is acting up. every once in awhile the needle will go all the way to the HOT side, then after a few minutes it will go back to normal. the first couple of times it did this i pulled over to check my fluids and i even felt the engine to see if it was unusually hot and everything seemed fine. does this sound like a problem with the guage or some kind of sensor? or should i be worried that the engine really is overheating? i just don't know why it would go back to normal for no reason.

technically the engine won't be any hotter with the gauge all the way up.. the coolant will be..

you might have a failing tstat... ... any way you can get someone to view live data for you? that might give away if its the thermometer, thermistor, whatever..

the stock gauge blows anyway... you may want to get a autometer gauge to keep an eye on the REAL temps perhaps pull the dask and inspect the plug in behind the gauge, it may just be getting old, also check to make sure the needle is on good DONT pull it off though.

Almost everytime I've had a flaky temp reading it's been the sending unit not the guage.
