"Black Box..."

My 2004 is supposed to get a "Black Box" in it...

Is somebody knows something about that "Stool..." ?
Does it register everything since it's been installed ?
Can I reset it by disconnecting the battery ?

Just thinking than if I do a fast start and shift near or in the redline the fact that a Ford technician can knows it makes me mad...

Thx

I've heard *speculation* about these things, but never heard of or seen them in a production car...

Is this a Canada thing or what?

I don't know if it's a Canadian **** or not...But I know that really exists...

I was at the dealer, 2 weeks ago, for a scheduled maintenance and an accidented Mustang arrived on a towing and the towing's driver told to the service's technician that the police will come to pickup the report they wanted to know at what speed the car was when the accident happened apparently there was one ppl dead...

So it exists for sure...

are you SURE they were talking about picking up a 'black box'?

Not to insult you, I just can't believe this thing might actually exist in production cars..

Not to insult you

It doesn't insult me at all...

But how can the police wait for a report that doesn't exist ?

The technician neither the driver seemed to joke...

I would be the happiest guy on earth to learn that it doesn't exist...

I'll do some more research about it, I tought that ppl here have heard about it.

Thx anyway...

I have heard rumors, but that's it.

Stick around a day or so, more people who know more will post.

i think there are ways to find out the speed of a car after an accident by the damage that is done to the car and at when the airbag was deployed. I am sure th OBDII logs that kind of stuff. I dunno, I am kinda reaching in the dark here.

haha i dont see a single MOPAR on that list, which just proves it, regardless of what the sales say, people who know real cars, instead of following stupid trends, prefer MOPAR od NOCAR!!

Nate's got the right idea, it is a datalog system that records certain EEC
functions. I'm not sure which ones but it's been around for a while.
Articles like the one above "assume" alot of things, and are written to
arouse fear. The best thing to do is ask a tuner, I'm sure there is something
you can do if you get a chip to fool/disable/affect the datalogging so as to
effectively disable it as far as insurance and law enforcement functions are
concerned.

The basic intended functions of datalogging are great, allowing the technician
who services the car to know exactly what was going on when a code was
tripped, making the car much easier to diagnose, but Big Brother lurking over
our shoulder all the time is fixing to get a finger in the eye, in more ways than
one!

It would be leagal to disable or reprogram it, because it is technically illegal
for certain functions of said datalogging to be used against the owner
anyway. Think of your computer, is it not yours and therefore legal for you
to alter and erase any part of it? Only if said records exist, and a court order
is issued may they be used against the owner. So you might as well get the
jump on "the system". Be aware and then you won't get bit! There are also
video camera watching well over 1/2 of our public lives when we leave our
houses, remember that Brent showed us his house on Sattelite Photos???

They can track his butt all the way from school, home, his GF's house and
anywhere he goes practially, and that is just with existing technology that
ias not even dedicated to tracking a "teenage moderator"
If they really wanted to watch someone they could get really intense!!!

Remember the movie "Enemy of the State"? Will Smith was really under the
microscope... they wanted him BAD! IMO there is alot of truth to that movie.

I think it records the impact information for when the air bags are deployed... i have also heard about a highest mph or if your cut off is reached it records this in the cpu... it would be VERY Easy to do this of course... and just as easy to undo it as well .

And why not put the black boxes in cars. Our society requires it. Every time a person is in a wreck people want to sue. Blaming the tire company, Car manufacturer and any one else that has ever touched the car. But with the box parents can blame themselves when there son or daughter fly into a tree at 100 MPH.

Hey now I resent that remark...I may drive fast on occasion, but I have never had an accident, gotten a ticket, or endangered anyone but myself doing these things. There are a few responsible fast drivers in this world.

Haha, very true. I got my license when I was 15..and yeh, I was inexperienced, and stupid, very stupid. And yup...just did alot of driving around, but never got a ticket or even had a minor accident, including backing into any stationary objects...running off into any ditches, hitting any trees, losing it in the ice and sliding off the road. I was a lucky kid I guess. I did watch a friend slide off in a ditch, but I had the brains to turn my car sideways on the road and stop in time and then laugh at him 10 feet off in the ditch.

I agree and understand the part of security and insurance, the part that makes me mad is all the information the dealer can obtain on the way I drive; it's like driving a car wich is not yours with the owner on the passenger seat...

Still again, THAT MAKES ME MAD...
