Bought a summer ride..'96...a few questions

I just bought a companion to my 03.A 1996 v6 Stang convertible, auto trans.I haven't done a whole lot of research yet.I know the car was originally sold in California when new.Does that mean it'll have a smog pump on it somewhere?

Also, are there any well known bugs about this year I'll need to know about? It has 112,000 miles.Very clean, runs out nice. Can't wait to put the top down and cruise!

Not sure if the smog pump thing was only on 99+ but i am pretty sure you have it also.... the only known bug for that year that is really worth looking into is a potential head gasket issue, mid 96+ they fixed it... so check your vin to see if it was fixed, maybe you got lucky it needed it and ford put a new motor in her they have been known to do that... if its not been fixed then your own your own the recall was only for 7 years.

^ haha, except I'm not lying. I liked the color.

I traded it in for a telephone pole though. If any of you ever get that opportunity, DON'T TAKE IT!

A few obserservations I 've made:The car appears to be 100% original. The spark plug wires look to be as old as the car,I'll change them out. Also,it needs a flush and refill for the coolant.
The car was owned by a couple in their mid sixties....get this..they traded it in for an 05 Mustang, lol!!Gotta love it.Oh yeah, the interior is nearly perfect.I think I'm gonna like this car.
I had no plans of buying this,but when I saw it I couldn't resist.I think I'm having a mid-life crisis!!

LOL, Congrats on the Stang!

BTW Mustangs weren't the only 94-96 Fords with head gasket problems! My 96 Windstar blew a head gasket for no aparent reason last year! It has a 3.8 V6, and at time it had about 120,000 miles on it. $1000 to fix

It might not be a bad idea to have it checked out just in case!

Exactly all 3.8's up to mid 96 had head gasket problems except the Thunderbird SC and that is where they went to fix it. The quick fix was to put on a Sc head gasket and in 96 sometime they had a new head similar to the Sc head. The cooling passages in the pre96 were designed to close to the cylinder wall and the gasket originally used deteriorated and blew

Ragtops Rule!

Check the level & color of the trans fluid if it looks ok and there are no shifting problems, that's good. Then maybe just the usual, oil change etc.

Might also want to change the fuel filter.

What color is it?

I don't know the color exactly. All the stickers and vin numbers match..but...the paint code doesn't.I went to the autozone, they said my code is for tan or silver????

If this car has been repainted whoever did it was a total pro.Its a cranberry looking metallic, thats all I can tell right now.The top is white.

I am pretty sure it is not Laser red then Because it is a tri color like Mystic. You have to paint a copper base, then a Pearl, then Rose or Rose then Pearl. The cost of the Tri color paint and thinners can cost up to $1,400 alone.

DD,do you happen to know the code for laser red?The car also has thin white pin-stripping but I'm guessing thats not original.

E9 is the Laser Red code and mine came with a thin white pin stripe on the upper door

Here's a bit of an update...

Took it to have the coolant flush/refill and install a new drive belt. They looked it over. The mechanic said its in very good condition, age and mileage considered. It appears to have been very well cared for,and has new struts on it.
One disheartening thing though.Upon close inspection rust has just begun to form a little at the bottom of the door panels.I'm in Ohio...that means ice, snow and road salt.In my experience this type of rust is hard to stop, usually spreads like wildfire.
Thing of it is I really like this car,but it'll be expensive to have this taken care of.
