aod on a 289 - Mustang Evolution

aod on a 289

anyone know what it will take to put an aod on a 289, its for a friend who has a 66 mustang coupe, but he is tired of the three speed so he wants to see if he can swap it to an aod. anyonw know what it takes to do so?

keep it 3spd (auto or manual?), its fun if anything maybe a different bell housing would be needed for it to bolt up. 289/302/351w same block so maybe he should look into that.

the tranny will bolt up, thats not an issue

the hard part will be the crossmember, the shifter linkages, and the throttle valve cable/linkage

so getting one from a 302 would work? cool then. are there any places that sell the cross member for that, the TV cable and shifter linkage would have to be modded but we can fab something up. so the only real problem is the crossmember?

he should do a t-5 swap! 5 gears w/ cable clutch > 3 gears with z-bar. pretty easy to do also

but yes, as the others have said... fitment isn't the issue, it's the finishing that may be a PITA. make sure the place where the new brace bolts up is solid and not rusted... or he'll end up dragging his tranny down the highway later.
