Gear question

hey, i was out with a few friends yesterday, and we were messing around and they noticed that my shifting was really odd. iam able to hold it till 1800rpm befor i start to burnout, is that normal for a 04 v6 auto? when i floor it at 0mph, in 1st it will go all the way to 5500rpm, but after 20mph in 1st, and i floor it it will go to 5200rpm. when i floor it in 2nd at 30, it will shoot up to 3k rpm, and then to 5200prm really slow, but between 40-60mph i floor it and it shoots up past 4k rpm, and finishes at 5500rpm. also, i had raced a friend of mine, and he has a 2000 v6 auto, with basic bolt on's and when my car was stock i pulled him priy hard, like i finished 3rd befor he was midway throuhgh 2nd, and i was toped out at around 80mph befor he was at 60mph. so we came to the conclusion that i may have some different gears, sorry if it sounds unclear, but its alittle hard to explain without seeing, well any help will be thankfull.

Re: Gear question

Forgetting all of the when I do this and this and this stuff...when you cruise at say 60, 70, or 80 mph...what are your RPM's at?

Different shift points are a result of a number of parameters your computer is reading. However, when cruising, there is no parameter other than speed.

Re: Gear question

well, when i cruse between 50-80 its at around 2500 rpm. to 3000 rpm. anything below that is at around 1500 rpm, to 2000 rpm. i think i may have higher gears. oh, and btw i idle at around 900 and in park its at around 1000k.

Re: Gear question

you can use an online calculator, you take your MPH, put in your transmission gear ratio, and it will tell you your final drive.

Re: Gear question

Sounds like it shifts and responds to certain speeds like my auto when it had stock shift points. At a certain speed, your comp has to make a decision wether to down shift or ride it out. If you stomp it at a speed where it decides to just ride it out, it will do just that. I never used to like rolling start races for that reason.

Yah, and that's why rolling start races suck in an auto v6...hell you floor it and it takes 3 seconds to pull...meanwhile, the other car is a length ahead of you already. I suppose a good ol' tune will fix that issue...

Re: Gear question

oh, thats werid u say that, because with role races, i actually do prity good, if iam in the right rpm. if iam in say 40, at 1500rpm then i will get a good pull, but if iam in 30 at say around 200rpm, its very slow, but if iam at 50-70mph at 2500, it will shot up to 4000rpm and shift at 5200rpm, but basicaly iam toped at 80mph, it doesnt really take to long to get to the top speed 118 or what ever it is, but after about 90 or so, i feal the engine slowing down, and thas y i think i have gears or soemthing, cause how can i shift befor anotehr 99-04 v6? without gears?

Re: Gear question

you can know for sure if you rotate your tire 360 degrees and count the revolutions of your drive shaft. The final result should be 3.27:1 if its stock gearing.

A tune REALLY wakes up auto mustangs

Re: Gear question

So you beat your buddy? By how much

My 2003 V6 has 4.10s in it and at 80mph, it will be at 3000RPM (overdrive/last gear). Sounds like you probably have 4.10s ... which is almost exactly 25% more torque / launching power than stock.

Re: Gear question

well, i beat him prity bad form 0, i took him to 80mph, and slowed down when he was at about 60 or so.. my 0-60 is just about 7sec. his is around 9/10 or so. anyway, form 0, it went up to 5500rpm, to second, then at 3rd, it went up to 5200rpm, then it was pinned at 5200rpm at around 80mph or so. iam prity shure i have 4.10s or maby something alittle smaller. once i start school in a few weeks, i will have to check to see if its true or not.

Re: Gear question

If you're pinned and you're only in the 80mph range it sounds like 4.10's. I upgraded mine about 6 months ago. Best upgrade BY FAR.

P.S.-Does mystanghurts04's responses give anyone else a head ache?
