Question Exhaust help?

Okay I have a 2000 V6

I need to get some exhaust for it.

I want to get some new headers and then go all the way back with new exhaust.
Dual is needed, of course.

But, it needs to be street-legal (with cats on it) and everything.

Is there a kit I can get?
I would like to get it from AmericanMuscle but mostly all I see is X-pipes and I don't think those are street-legal.

Re: Exhaust help?

Also, for sound, would it be better to get shorty headers or long-tube headers?
Can I even get long-tubes for a V6?

Re: Exhaust help?

Well, Chile10_Stang just bought the Pypes true dual system with a catted x-pipe. You could get something like that, or just have a shop custom fab some piping with your choice of mufflers. A midpipe like an h or x pipe isn't too necessary since our engine's are even firing, but it's up to you.

If you really want a catted x or h-pipe, you could buy a catback along with an x or h pipe and have it installed, or get the custom piping along with an x or h pipe. You do have some options...

Headers on a v6 in general have mixed reviews. Some say they are pointless until forced induction, others say longtubes add on 10+ hp. Longtubes are available for v6's as are many shorty's (ceramic, polished etc.). I say it's up to you...if anything the longtubes will improve sound.

Re: Exhaust help?

If all you are wanting is sound....just do a catback. I've had an O/R X pipe on a v6 and it sounded like a dying cat. Probably the best setup I ever did was a set of flowtech turbo mufflers, no crossover, factory midpipe. This setup dumped will set off every car alarm in the parking lot guaranteed.

I am of the opinion longtubes is a waste of money and time on an otherwise stock V6. If you are doing ported heads and cam at the same time then sure...

Re: Exhaust help?

^^^Yah good point. Dumps would give you a deeper sound and you could keep your stock bumper. To give you my opinion headers, I'd have to agree with lowflyn...they're probably a waste of money on a stock v6...unless one of your stock headers has cracked or something, I wouldn't replace them.

Re: Exhaust help?

not sure if they still do this but Razzi sold the Borla kit for the V6 mustang very cheep. But any GT system will work as long as you get an h/x pipe made. any shorty would be fine. the do flow better then the stock manifold. I really wouldnt worry about headers you buy since you cant see the CARB E.O. number anyways.

I think it was installed incorrectly the first time, and whoever fixed it welded parts of the exhaust which makes things even more difficult to fix.

Generally, the Pypes systems aren't horrible to install...worst thing I've heard is that they are too long and need an inch or two cut off. I've never heard of issues with the axle pieces and tips like what he's going through.

Re: Exhaust help?

He did. If you want a deeper sound, get the MAC or Pacesetter long tubes, and the Offroad h pipe to match. From there you can pretty much get any cat-back exhaust system you want.
