Re: headers help?

To be honest, unless your stock headers are cracked or having serious issues, I wouldn't worry about aftermarket ones. The 99-04 stock headers are good enough on a lightly modded v6.

I would save the money and spend it on gears/tlok or a tuner.

Re: headers help?

A handheld tuner will "wake up" your car. It will improve acceleration, free up some hp and torque, sometimes some mpgs.
It will also adjust your speedometer after gear or tire changes, disable traction control, raise the rev limiter, disable the governer etc.

It is highly recommended if you're an auto tranny, since it'll will improve your shift points and firmness tremendously.

SCT makes a decent tuner, as does Diablosport. Handeld tuners are easier than chips because the computer and tuner are really doing all the work. You receive the tune in an e-mail, download the tune onto the tuner, plug it into your car, and upload it into the car's computer...the thing to remember is not to buy a pre-loaded tuner from a company. Some offer off the shelf tuners, they aren't any good. You want a custom tune made according to your car's modifications.

VMP tuning does a great job with v6's...they use SCT. You can give your list of current mods and what type of tunes you want (I think you get 3)

Re: headers help?

The tlok looks good. I'd try and get Ford Racing Gears as well. Sometimes the Motive or Yukon brands can cause whine when driving. Even more if they're installed incorrectly. Common saying is 4.10's for autos, 3.73's for manuals.

I'd also get a bearing kit to rebuild the rearend if your 04 has higher miles (+50k), and gear oil (Royal Purple is good) is needed regardless.

I would install both at the same time, they can be installed at the same time, any shop that tells you otherwise is bad news. Gears/tlok are probably two of the most effective mods for the v6's. While you won't gain hp, it'll definitely feel like you did...better acceleration, better launches, increased traction/handling, and two wheel burnouts
