3.9???

I have a 2004 3.9 v6 automatic and I've been wanting to get an Exhaust System/Headers/Intake/Etc.. Every website I go to for mustang parts sells them for the "1999-2004 3.8L v6" Does anyone know if I can use performance parts such as these on my 3.9? I can't find any place that specifically makes things for that engine. Thanks!

Re: 3.9???

The 3.9 and the 3.8 are basically the same motor. Anything that will fit a 3.8 will fit a 3.9.

Re: 3.9???

yup the difference is some left over van parts like the crank and rods that slightly bump it to 3.9L.

I dont know of anything that is not compatible modification wise from the 3.8L engine to the 3.9L engine.

Re: 3.9???

Here is a fun fact also, according to Auto zone's website, 80% of 2004 mustangs have the 3.9 while the other 20% have the 3.8. I am one of the 20% who got the 3.8

Re: 3.9???

headers are nearly worthless on the V6. You basically do a cold air intake, under drive pulley, and exhaust (exhaust first for sound, looks, and performance) and such finish off with a tune (hand held so you can modify later for different things)

After the basic things you can do rear end gears and a positive traction tlok unit (both wheel spin vs one wheel spin stock). This is the BEST bang for the buck but hurts gas mileage and can be costly (especially if not installed correctly).

For looks/handling lowering with a set of nice wheels/tires makes ALL the difference.

I owned a 97 3.8L v6 mustang and a 01 3.8L v6 mustang before my 03, there are tons of things to do and they have tons of potential, but the basic bolt ons will not do much of anything sadly... but every little bit helps.

Re: 3.9???

A custom tune would wake it up tremendously. It will change your shift points and improve the shift pressures and make it feel like a completely different car.

Re: 3.9???

would the transmission as it is right now be able to handle any modding?

Re: 3.9???

Absolutely. Kyle that used to be on here alot had an 04 auto. Had a very aggressive custom tune, standard bolt ons (under drive pulley, CAI, etc). His car was fine. Keep in mind, you have the same transmission they put into the auto MACH 1's and GT's as well. You are good to go with your car before you start endangering the trans.

Re: 3.9???

Your transmission will be fine. I'm around 350 to the wheels on a stock auto with nothing but a secondary inline tranny cooler.

Re: 3.9???

So what happens if i get my car tuned and then continue modding my car? Will I have to get it tuned again? I checked out that VMP Tuning site, they have some cool stuff.

Re: 3.9???

It depends on the mods you add. If you change out things like your MAF, heads, maybe a ported intake...then yeah, you would need an updated. IF you're just talking UD pulleys, CAI, mufflers, and things like that, then no, you won't.
