4.2 not running right... I guess

So I installed the 4.2 into my mustang, made it look all pretty, but they my tuning chip that I mail ordered wouldn't work. Car would fire up, idle down and then die right away. So I rented a trailer and took it to a dyno shop. They tuned it but said that they couldn't figure out an idle problem. So I got it towed back to my shop so that I could work on it, since they said they were really busy and didn't have time to look at it. They said that it would run fine for about a half hour, then run poorly and die. Then it woudln't restart for a few hours. It's not overheating, so I figured it was something electrical. Well, the car is currently sitting in the shop running. Has for 45 min. It ran well over an hour last night after work too. They took the tune flash back out of the PCM before I got it back, "so it would be easier to trouble shoot." Not a lot of help since it runs without dieing now. I scanned it and got a p0602 code. Which is a code set when the PCM is in need of a reflash, or replacement. This is really getting aggrivating. I'm down about $200 for trailer rental and tow service and they didn't do a god damn thing.

Does anyone have any advice?

It's the same PCM and harness that have always been in the car. I've removed and reseated the PCM connector. Seems good to me. I've also tried getting it to run with a mail order SCT chip, but the car won't run AT ALL with it in. Starts after a long crank and dies right away. You can't even feather the throttle and keep it going.

Wow. 30lb injectors on the stock tune, and the computer thinks bank 2 is lean. 20% positive fuel trim. O2 sensors check out. So does the wiring between O2 sensor and PCM. Time to start pulling the upper intake and checking the injector harness I suppose. *sigh* I was supposed to be nearly done with break in by now. Damn it.

in a related note... wanna help me install some trickflow heads in the next year

The luck you're having with this car really sucks. I hope you can get it turned around and that the motor will be a solid runner for you.

Long shot, but are you sure your fuel pumps aren't failing?

Re: 4.2 not running right... I guess

Well, I have only one fuel pump, but that one's working fine. 300LPH should be sufficient once I get the thing tuned.

I think I figured out the lean problem. The bank that's lean is the bank opposite the fuel feed. With the pass. side injectors cranking out WAY too much fuel, I think the rail pressure might be low on the drivers side. Either way, I can't get it to die the way the Dyno place said it did when they tuned it, so I drove it back over there. The think won't come down off higher RPM to Idle worth crap and the plugs are getting fuel fouled. Hopefully they'll believe me that the car runs "ok" without their tune and they'll figure out what went wrong. I'll keep everybody posted.

Re: 4.2 not running right... I guess

P.S. even with a ****ty tune and not idling for crap the motor has quite a bit of torque, so that made me happy at least. This was the first chance I had to drive the thing at all since I tore it apart around the middle of June.
