Cam=camshaft.

A camshaft is what opens the valves in the heads. The cam determines when the valves open in relation to the crankshaft position. It controls how open the valves are, how long they stay open and the opening, as well as closing relationship between the intake and exhaust.

It pretty much is the "brain" of the engine.

I consider it to be the diaphram of the engine, The intakes being the lungs, the oil is the blood, the EEC being the brain and the cylinders being the stomach.

Well, in a non-computer controlled engine there is no EEC (or equivalent). Which is why I consider the cam the brain.
