Tips on buying a used Mustang?

My friend is looking at a 1995 V6 Mustang today and is wanting me to go with him.

Here's what I know so far about it and this is what the seller told my friend:

It is red (but really faded, it needs to be repainted)
The body is in good condition.
The odometer is apparently not working, and I'm not sure what it reads now.

The guy is selling it for $1000, which is pretty freakin cheap.
And, my friend is VERY limited in funding, so this seems to be a perfect option.

He was thinking about getting a V8, but after realizing the cost of insurance/gas versus a V6, he is deciding on a V6.

What are some things we should be looking for as far as what the car is actually worth and such?

Head gasket, head gasket, head gasket. Run the vehicle for a couple min, then open the radiator cap. if its a tanish color, and/or "frothy" just say thank you and walk away. Other than that, just the normal things. Oil not totally burnt up, trans fluid isn't to dark, heater works, a/c if its important to you. Check under vehicle for rust, or holes. Any ticking or rattling noise in engine. Make sure is shifts smooth, etc. Oh ya, HEAD GASKETS

94-early 96 had head gasket issues, header cracks from ac dripping on them (usually passenger side i think)

find a 94 or 95 5.0 (only 5.0s with the rounder newer looking body style) you can find them running for under 3k... there's stroker kits out there for about $2100 that put down over 400whp... just a thought

Well 5.0s aren't exactly easy on gas, nor are they cheap for insurance.

If he gets a Mustang, it'd have to be a V6 for those reasons, and, most likely, not a very good one haha.

Well, that's the thing though. A v6 mustang in terrible running condition isn't going to get better gas mileage than a v8. Plus, he'd be dumping money into it just to keep it running. I'd look for a cheap v8, at least then he gets what he really wants...if anything, a decent running v6 from 98-00.

Also, depending on his driving history and credit score/history, insurance rates on a v8 compared to a v6 aren't always that much higher.

Re: Tips on buying a used Mustang?

V6 mustangs don't get much better gas milage its sad but true~ A GT of the same year will get 2 mpg worse on the interstate on average. Some claim their v6 gets 28mpg (edit) or so on the interstate but ive never seen it and ive owned a 97 and an 01.

Re: Tips on buying a used Mustang?

Yeah, the best gas mileage I've gotten on one tank is 21 but that's all mixed highway/city. I've never taken my stang on any long highway trips (yet.)

But as far as insurance goes, he has a completely clean record (so far) no tickets, no wrecks, etc.

Right now he's waiting til he can get some more money in to spend on a car, so he has more time to research and find out what he really wants.

Anyone here with a 90s GT that can give me an (accurate) estimate for gas mileage?
