oil in air filter housing

I just bought a 99 mustang with a 3.8 and when i took the air filter out it was full of oil any idea what caused this.....thanks

oil can come out of the valve cover and get into the intake tract, most of the time its from the other side but it can come from the passenger side as well. It comes from the valve cover air vent.

oh, I was thinking some people put way too much oil on K&Ns. I did on the first one I got!

I assume by oil you mean engine oil right? You should not see any oil above the PCV valve (not out of the throttle body) verify this... but it could get sucked up into the intake I guess.

Does it come past the PVC line, can you tell if its coming from that area or from the throttle body etc?
