Strange noise....fuel pump?

My '96 v6 has a mid to high frequency humming noise that runs non-stop.It actually changes pitch a bit if you use any of the controls such as power windows,or turn signals ect.
A guy at work said its the fuel pump and that its quite common on Fords from 1996.The car runs fine with no problems but the sound is getting on my nerves.
Any ideas or suggestions???

Well using the power windows or turn signals changes the electrical needs of your car, so it usually increases the RPMs slightly.

My suggestion is to take off your belt and spin all the pulleys by hand, find the one that makes a different noise. If it makes a noise when you hand spin it, think about the noise it'll be making at 2,500 RPMs.

Then messing with your pulley's wont do a thing. If it is continously running you either have a pump that is clogged or inside the tank or the pump is going out. I tis probably not the fuel filter because if it was clogged the car would have starvation problems

It has no problem at all getting fuel, starts right up,no hesitation, runs well.
The noise does run non-stop.The fellow at work said it may quit tomorrow-might run like this for years....I don't find much comfort in that.

hmmm, the fuel pump can be heard with out the car running if you turn the key to on with out cranking the car, it will click on, listen for it and see if thats the noise, it dont last long so listen close.

it may just be loud, or going out and making more noise, when you pull power by rolling up the windows at idle it may strain the pump a little bit not getting all the power it needs and making it die down... but I wouldnt think so. Your battery may be going bad? do you have an UDP?

better yet start and run your car without the belt on, if the noise goes away you know its an accessory.. if it stays you know for sure its the fuel pump..

Bad idea. Your water pump wouldnt be moving colant that way. I guess it wouldnt hurt much if it was only quickly. :dunno:

Does this mean its on the way to failure?Or....more just a quirk of the pump?

My 96 has the fuel pump noise. Pull the gas cap and listen, is the nosie louder there? If so there you go. I've probably put 40k miles on it since I bought it and the pump has always made that noise. And no it's not a plugged filter or pump either.
