Rack and pinion

Need a new one, mine has slop in it on the driver's side.

Any sources for a quality unit?

I am thinking of NAPA, at $180, so prices should be somewhere close to that, less is better of course and you can forget Vatozone.

Ok, I dug into this some.

Using A1 Cardone part numbers:

1996 Stang (all) 22-216
2003 Stang
V6: 22-245
Cobra: 22-238

Unfortunately, A1 Cardone doesn't give the specs for the 2003 racks, I do have the dimensions for the 1996 one though. The part number differences could mean internal differences, or external, I don;t know. Wish I did cause I found a source for a 2003 Cobra rack for $170 exc.

Maybe, maybe not.

What if the hose fittings changed?

Or the bushing spacing?

Or ???

Only one way to tell.

I know the Cobra with it's supercharger uses hydraboost for power brakes, which means I cannot even confirm if the hoses will bolt up.

Too many variables.

Update:

Autozone lists the same exact part number for a 1996 V6 Stang and a 2003 Cobra. I know that isn;t correct. But does it mean they will functionally swap or that Autozone messed up the part numbers? Probably the second.

Well, going to the manufacturer's webpage they show the same info Autozone has listed. So if it is a mistake it's ATSCO's not autozone.

the fact that you just brought to my attention that they use hydra boost makes me weary about it fitting now.

A good way to find out is to call a good junkyard and have them look them up for you in their interchange listings, that will tell you if they are interchangeable. They should have Hollander books or a computer program for it.

My experience with hollander interchanges is that if the part isn't functionally identical and bolts in then it isn't listed as an interchange.

For example, let us say the 03 Cobra R&P will work on my 96 V6 Stang if you also use the Cobra spindles, or the Cobra Hoses, or a part of the Cobra's steering shaft then Hollander's will not list it as an interchange.

If the Cobra R&P will bolt up without any other parts needed, but the lock to lock ratio is different it may list it with a note, but it probably doesn't.

I regularly hit up www.car-parts.com, which is a huge online junkyard search site and they use the Hollander interchange system to find you parts. It does not come up with any R&P for an 03 Cobra, but it does come up with lots of units for a 96 Stang.

This all being said I bought a replacement for a 96 Stang.
