odd sound. power steering pump?

I've got a high pitched whine(like servos or some eletrically powered motor) coming from the front of my 02 v6 auto(i know, but my other cra got totaled, i needed a new one, and the dealer that owed me a favor had this one on the lot). It's not so noticable with music on but loud enough to be irritating when it's quiet. Started maybe a month after i put in my stut tower brace but i doubt that has anything to do with it. It sound suspiciously like the sound that came from my 3000GT when a power steering fluid leak emptied that system almost entirely. The sound is irritating as hell, and moreover i'm worried about it damaging something if a pump is running dry.
soooooo,
has anyone else has a problem like this?
is the fluid in the power steering fluid resivoir supposed to be dark in color(really watered down coffee color)?
any suggestions on what else it might be if not the power steering system?

for the love of god, please make the sound stop!
thanks

Well how is the fluid level?

spin the power steering pulley and then spin some of the others and see if the bearing may be going bad.

Flush the powersteering fluid and refill it up.

Power steering fluid will absorb water when the fluid gets hot then cools down moisture forms and is absorbed into the fluid. After a few years there can be as much as 10-15% or more water entrained in the fluid. Brakes are even worse with 20-30% water in the system. If it looks like coffee it is time to change.

To change it I take the pressure line off and turn on the car pumping the fluid out. This should happen pretty fast then I reattach the line and fill the tank back up. Run it for a bit and check the fluid again.
