Engine Swap?

So... Tonight at dinner my uncle proposed to me the idea of an engine swap, from the 4.0 to the 5.0. I know this is alot of work, but considering the things I had planned for that poor 4.0... It wouldn't be too much, and probably save time and money if I only have to assemble the vehicle once.

I know I'd need a stiffer set of shocks springs, complete handling upgrade.

Things I'd like to know...

The little things I'd have to change, IE: Steering? ect.?

How hard is it to find performance parts for the 302?

For the most part, would a 302 even FIT in a regular Mustang Coupe. I know a 4.6 does, and I should expect a 5.0 does if the GT500 uses a 5.4 and is similar in design...

Where could I go from a 302? Roots? Centrifugal S/C? N/A with a radical cam?

Money is not an object.

Discuss.

Re: Engine Swap?

If money is not an object i'd upgrade to a newer motor like a cobra unless u plan on buying a brand new crate 5.0. It would fit. You'll need all kinds of wiring and computer. New suspension. Bellhousing. New trans (stock would wear out). If you do that u might as well get a bigger rear end.

Re: Engine Swap?

I can't help with any geometry such as the steering or how well it will fit in and how it will mount, that may require some custom fab, but I would think the block would mostly fit in. You will probably have to upgrade some other components, everything from fuel to the cooling system.

Is there a reference of the dimensions of the 4.0 and 5.0?

As for the 302 itself are you looking to go old or new? If you pull one out from a foxbody the parts are plentiful and cheap. You can really do anything you want with it (supercharge, turbocharge, EFI, Carb). You can bore it out to a 306 or maybe even go to a 351 motor.

You can look at going for a new block, maybe pick up the BOSS 302 crate engine which might fit a little easier.

But I really don't really know the details or what have you, you're gonna' have to do a lot of research.

Re: Engine Swap?

If you want the hard honest truth... sell the car and when the 2011 gt's come out and buy one. Save every dime you can until then to offset the cost. They will have a modular 400hp(hope 400hp..) 5.0L v8. Dont butcher your v6 and ruin it with a v8 swap...

If you REALLY want a push rod 5.0L (which isnt really 5.0L's lol) then sell your car and buy a fox body or a 94-95 GT.

Re: Engine Swap?

If you are looking at buying an old 5.0, you will need everything. Computer, wiring harness, transmission, driveshaft, rear end, suspension, cooling system, fuel system. It's better to get a Foxbody like SpectorV said.

Re: Engine Swap?

lol. I might end up waiting.

If I join the Navy, then I'll probably sell my car when to 2011's come, hopefully with the 5.0's, and buy a GT.

Speaking of which, I saw a bunch of nice looking ones at a dealership an hour away from where I live... and I also saw one of the Taurus SHO's.

Jesus that car is huge.

Re: Engine Swap?

^ +1.

No joke though, its a nice looking and for a car that big, fairly quick.

Though I think a 3.5l V6 TT would be MUCH nicer for a 2009 Mustang Coupe.

but really, that'd be friggen nice. I really hope they make a crate engine for it.
