V6 needs more power

I have a 2001 v6 mustang with an automatic transmition that has no mods. I've been looking around at parts for it ( CAI, duel exhaust throtle body spacer ) but I don't know how much of a gain in power I can expect because of my car only being a v6. Can any body tell me what parts are even worth buying and what kind of an increase in power I can expect.
Thanks.

Ah yes, the first post. Here's a list of mods you can do from CAI to forced induction. I wouldn't worry about the TBS if I were you, it's a waste of money.

Yes but some people can't afford that luxury. That's why they make v6's that you can mod to outrun a v8.

Re: V6 needs more power

Yah the small bolt ons won't do too much. You might see some gains ~15-30hp with exhaust, cai, udp, tune, but that's about it.

I'd consider doing those, but if you really want serious power, you'd have to look into either forced induction (supercharger or turbo) or build the engine's internals.
That route is costly, $3000-5000 easily just for the power adder and labor.
Then you'll need supporting mods to handle the extra load - suspension, brakes, drivetrain, fuel, so it's a big step to take with your car.
Something to consider (if you really want to sink that much money into the v6 or look into v8's.)

Since you're an auto, I'd definitely look into gears/tlok and a tune. While this won't increase hp, it will boost acceleration, increase traction, better launches, and allow two wheel burnouts. It will be like night and day if you're an auto.

So in the end, the v6 is a great car, it has great potential, it just needs some help. You really have to decide how far you want to go with the car - mild daily driver, heavily modded track car, 350hp N/A street car. Any of these are possible if you have the time, patience, and money.

Something tells me that if you can't afford the v8, you probably can't afford to mod your v6 to outrun them

Re: V6 needs more power

It is true that the 3.8L does not respond great to mods, but it does respond.

For a CAI, exhaust, Under drive pulley, and a tune expect about 10hp MAX from each if you are lucky. Say you did all of the above, i would be happy with 30 more hp.

With an auto transmission a tune can really wake it up changing how it shifts and fluid pressure etc and that makes a big difference.

All in all I say you can shave a full second off your cars stock quarter miles time (15.6 manual 16.1 auto).

Rear end gears add NO power but make a GREAT change in the car, 4.10 for auto 3.73 for manual. And do a Tlok unit (so both wheels spin) when you do gears, gas mileage is hurt doing gears though... by about 2mpg highway, but you gain 1 mpg city.

Stock you are at 135rwhp you should be able to get around 160 without to much invested. Manuals have about 15 more rwhp to 20 more stock.

So thats what you are looking at for basic bolt on modifications, if I didnt list it then... dont do it

If you want more you can build your 3.8L into a 4.2L stroker engine (F150 parts) and port the heads/intake and have a custom cam. The end result will be about 250 rwhp/tq which isnt to bad.

Re: V6 needs more power

I'll probally stick to CAI, exhaust, 4.10 gears , a Tlock and a tune. From the sounds of it those mods will give me enough power for what I use the car for. I was never looking to out run any 4.6L, I don't have the budget for that right now, but mabey in a few years I'll be able to invest a bit more into my car.
Thanks for all the advice.

Re: V6 needs more power

Yah, there are plenty of guys here with lightly modded v6's like that and are happy with the performance. I plan on doing the same mods for now, then when the pocket allows, consider bigger mods.
