Engines...

So, noone replied to my last thread and I lost my leads... And my motivation to take out a 3.8 only to put a 3.8 back in....... I want something more ...standard I guess you could say. Looking around for parts for the 3.8 has been horrible so I'm thinking of going to something bigger, a v8 of some kind....which ones would fit into the 96 Mustang though?

Re: Engines...

Basically the older motors (such as the 5.0L) are pushrod motors. The 3.8L and 4.6L engines (for example) are considered modular engines.

I don't think this is an exact definition of pushrod motors (or rather how to differentiate pushrods and modular motors) but I usually consider the fact that modular engines have over head cams (OHC), either single or double (SOHC, DOHC respectively). The pushrods do just that, push rods which than push the valve arms to open the valves. The camshaft in pushrod motors is usually above the Crankshaft on the engine.

Re: Engines...

get a 99-04 4.6L at least, the 4.6L from 96-98 is a very low performing engine out of the box.

Re: Engines...

I've been debating things alot...the need to do the legal thing through DMV and or emissions would be obnoxious..... Is there any possibility that I could get a good deal out of a 3.8 swap? I mean if I get a new[er] 3.8 from a matching model or sized vehicle, do everything I want to the said motor while it's not int he car, mod it, use a kit on it, etc etc etc.....how much better would that be than a standard 3.8?

Re: Engines...

it all depends on how money your willing to dump in to it the new mofied mustang and fords mag has a 3.8 with 640 hp that runs 9.83s at 140 so there is stuff for the 3.8 out there. so to me thats alot better than a standard 3.8

Re: Engines...

Yeah, but I don't have that kind of money to just drop at one moment. At least the project of it can keep me busy and give me a sense of accomplishment and the like....
