KN heatshield problem

alright so ive had the K&N FIPK for a while now..today i was out on I80 and i noticed my hood on the passanger side ( around the area of my filter ) was bouncing and lifting up a little bit with the air. it finnally unlatched ( didnt pop up but it came undone as it would if i pulled the release peice inside the car ). pulled on the sholder pushed the hood closed and went back home. I came to the conclusion that my heatshield where it goes along the side of my filter is hitting the underside of my hood causing this to happen, any idea s of how i could stop this ? would it be possible to make a chalk line on the heatshield and trim it down enough so it wont hit ?

Re: KN heatshield problem

i just got rid of my heat shield all together since my filter sits in the fender well. I was told that heat shields have an advantage and disadvantages. disadvantage is that all the cooler air is being forced into your intake but the engine itself doesn't recieve that cool air since it's blocked by the shield.
i don't know if that creates a problem or how accurate that statement is. don't quote me cuz i just heard it.
anyways yes you can trim it down with a dremel or something like it. it must be hitting the underside of your hood pretty damn hard to have it get loose like that. are you sure it just didn't get shut all the way? i know you gotta slam the hood down good. maybe use a zip tie or bolt it down somehow. just random suggestions....

Re: KN heatshield problem

yeah what i noticed after closing the hood numerous times just to test it is its nice and secure all over except for a little flex around my filter area where i can lift my hood just a little.im prob just going to dremel the heatshield a little bit.the kn fipk needs the heatshield because its what the MAF bolts up to and also holds the filter and the lower part of the intake tube secure by bolting up to my ac compressor

If you compare the fact that the heat shield blocks the fenderwall hole just like the stock box with cone does, you will realize that statement is false. The hole in the fenderwall is not for engine cooling at all. It is solely for the intake of cool air from outside the engine compartment. Not sure who told you that info, but they are just silly.

Re: KN heatshield problem

i called up KN they're sending me a new 1 but as i get to 65,70mph that part of the hood will acually lift up and down from all the air getting under where its not secure and it eventually de-latched. didnt pop up but how it would if i pull the hood release

Re: KN heatshield problem

when i had one on my v6 i could see on the underside of the hood where the sheild was hitting the insulator(sp?) but never had that kinda problem... maybe you can bend the bracket a little bit where it bolts to the a/c compressor?

Re: KN heatshield problem

installed the stock intake system so i could see if the hood still flopped around and it does with the KN fipk and without so i guess it has something to do with the latch or something
