New transmission

Hello all;

Site is looking great Brent!!. This is Jorge from a looong time ago..lol. I had to make a new user name...
Anyways, so my transmission is Kaput...Since I am going to spend the money for someone to get up in there anyway, do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do to make it worth while?, gears, etc...I don't know what to do, shuld I take it to a shop and have them rebuild my tranny? should I buy one online and have it installed? or should I just have the shop put in a rebuilt transmission of their own and I would provide them with any add ons? I'm at a loss here. but sure thing the transmission is bye bye..so go ahead do what u do my friends...
thanks

Re: New transmission

My issues with getting it rebuilt is ... will it be a good job. Ive seen to many people burned by shops that rebuild them only to install them and they do not work correctly... the shop says its your fault for "racing it" regardless and you are back to square one.

Thats why my personal opinion is to buy new from some company and then just install it. But... its up to you if you wish to risk it to a re builder. It could be good or it could not last a day... or just a month its a risk you have to take.

Re: New transmission

A guy here on Long Island (south east New York) a guy specializes on trading, buying, selling and restoring T5 transmissions.

A local is also trying to sell a 3650 out of an low mileage '02.

Go with a new clutch if you want, especially if it's older or starting to get worn out or will need to be replaced soon.

Rear end gears are separate so you don't have to get them done at the same time (unless you want to).

I think Jasper offers transmissions at a good price.

Re: New transmission

Try Checkers or Autozone, they use Everdrive, which are used, but you get a 3 year unlimited mile warranty and if it is installed by an ASE mech, you get a year labor warranty also. About $1,100 for a 470rw (Auto)

Re: New transmission

hey guys....not to steal the thread but i am getting ready to put on my TMA TT kit found one on another site (HELL YEA SOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!). Anyway i want to do this right and was wondering what transmission upgrades or swaps I would need to do to make this a reliable dailu driver. i am planning on running 10.3 lbs of boost so I can stick with pump gas. So that puts me near or over 400 hp I think. Anyway thanks for the help everyone.

Re: New transmission

I think the T5 should hold up pretty well. They are rated at 300 ft/lbs, so maybe just getting some stronger internals. The T5s are known to go past that mark stock however. I'd upgrade the rear end to an 8.8" if you haven't done so already since the 7.5" is a bit weak.

In case you haven't done the rear, grab one of a GT and go with some 3.73 gears. You'll have a good kick when you start while the Turbo spools up

Re: New transmission

Are T5's from GT's equivalent to T5's from V6's? I'm just wondering because in the future I plan on ridding my car of the 470RW. I know it would be a hassle, but I'm original owner and don't want to trade for a manual (sentimental value thing I suppose). Just wondering.

Re: New transmission

I don't know too many specifics, but here's what I can think of,

In mid-2001 the T5 in GTs were replaced with the Tremec 3650. As far as I can tell the V6 models still retained the T5 transmission. Other than the strength of the transmission between models, wouldn't shouldn't be that much different if they even are, I can't think of any differences in the T5 for the SN95 models. I haven't seen too many T5s though maybe somebody has can tell you exact differences, if any.

T5s are plentiful and cheap though so I wouldn't worry about not finding one.
