adjusting the carb on an 82 GL?

My friend at work has an 82 mustang GL in need of some help to say the least. lol. I took him to my exhaust shop that i always go to to replace one of his catalytic converters. The lady there told us of a smog place we could get a free pre test, so we headed there next......Anyways he passed everything except for the gas part of smog. I wish i had the papers with me, but the limit for gas was suppose to be .99 and he had 9.84! it's running way too rich.
Just wondering if his carb can be adjusted or if he has to get a new one.

I don't know much about carbs...but it seems there should be some sort of adjustment screw in there somewhere...

Re: adjusting the carb on an 82 GL?

you can adjust almost any carb through the jets that the fuel comes through. it sounds like you jets in the carb is fully open and letting too much fuel in or you may need a new fuel pressure regulator. but you can adjust the jets in the carb assuming it is a 4bl carb. look in a haynes manual to see how exactly or contact your local shop, even a mom and pop shop, they can help you.

Re: adjusting the carb on an 82 GL?

Unless someone has been dinking with it a simple rebuild and new floats should fix his problem. Don't forget to properly adjust the floats and in general verify/tweak all the adjustments called out in the rebuild kit, as needed of course, if it's in spec don't tweak it. You shouldn't have to fool with the jetting, it's not really adjustable without replacing the jets with different sized ones, so inother words they don;t go oult of adjustment or wear.

Another possibility is that the choke is not opening up, which would make it run rich.
