tranny noise???

a nasty clicking noise is coming from my tranny. i have a spec stage 3 clutch and was not smart enough to get a ford t/o bearing and used the spec t/o bearing. is that the problem, or is something else wrong. the clicking is very fast and gets faster with more speed and if i push the clutch in just a little to get rid of the slack the noise stops, and if i push it in all the way it stops too. got any ideas? if it is the t/o bearing how much would it be to fix? btw the noise will still do it if i'm in neutral and the clutch is all the way out.

Re: tranny noise???

sounds like TOB to me.

if youre in neutral and its making the noise, does it stop when you apply the slightest clutch pressure? definate TOB problem if so.

now if it was a clicking when the clutch was engaged and no click when it was in neutral, it would be something on the clutch side going(or gone) out.

always use OEM TOB.

Re: tranny noise???

is the centerforce to bearing ok to use, or is it just as bad as the spec TOB? i found a TOB sold alone for my stang but its a centerforce TOB and it cost $35, which is reasonable. i just don't know about their reputation for their TOB's. any advice.

Re: tranny noise???

Ive been though 5 throwout bearing so I know a little bit about this lol.....

They have NEVER been able to stop it EVER.

You can delay them going bad by taking up the slack in your clutch petal, if you look in the article section I wrote a how to on adjusting your clutch.

If you are stock... its not gonna work to good, the key is taking all the slack out of the cable, the wobble if you will. So when you touch the petal its firm to the touch, and you have a half inch of pushing in before the car starts to clip in to neutral (go 50mph down the road and hold the gas constant and tap the clutch, go in a half an inch and if it starts to slip after that then you are good)

Keeping the right amount of tension on the cable keeps the throwout bearing healthy. If i let my clutch unadjust its self a bit it will start ticking... I take up the slack and it goes away. This will keep it healthy a bit longer.

Re: tranny noise???

i hear that the way to adjust your clutch pedal is to lift the pedal completely for a short period of time when the car is running to let it align itself. i also just ordered a new centerforce TOB at draxas.com and i hope this one will last a bit longer. i also think i need to change the transmission fluid in it too, its due. i think changing the fluid might help the clutch a little too.
