suspension installation

ok on the how to article on this site it suggest using the differential and K member as a jacking point. but in my owners manual it says in i think 2 different locations to never jack the car up under the diff or k member. will the stress on these parts cause any problems? or is it just written like that in the manual so nobody attempts to try it?

i'm not saying his how to article is wrong by any means, just want to know the best way to install my suspension package in the future.

Re: suspension installation

I always jack my car up on the front K member and the rear up on the pumpkin of the differential.

Re: suspension installation

yea i've done it before too until i read in the manual to not do it ever. I'm just extremely paranoid about everything now and don't want to put stress on the wrong part of the car.

Re: suspension installation

i have heard that when you jack from the pumkin it makes it go like this ( because the support is on the middle and you allow the sides to sag
but i dont know if it is true

Re: suspension installation

It would be better to jack the front at the jack body point and then if you need to raise or lower the front spindle or A arm you use a second jack. Jacking from the pumkin is fine but I would stress not keeping it there for your safety and put Jack stands on the axle housings.

Re: suspension installation

Yeh..good point, I only lift my car at those points while I place jack stands, I never leave the car up on the jack, don't trust it near that much.

Re: suspension installation

If you need to raise the front end to place the car on jack stands its nearly impossible to do so with out jacking from under the K member. You cant evenly raise both sides of the car at the same time from another point. You could jack each side by the frame rail jack points, but you try putting a jack stand under one side at a time.....

Just take it easy on it and you wont have a problem jacking the car from the K member.

As far as the rear of tthe car, you can jake by the pumpkin if you make sure to put no stress on the rear end cover. Make sure no jack teeth are pushing on it or what not and you should be fine.
