Service Engine Soon light on

My Service Engine Soon light recently came on and has stayed on the past 2 days. I have noticed no problems with the car whatsoever. It accelerates and handles loads as well as it always has.

My car recently rolled over 97,000 miles, the light came on around 97,300. Is this just a "please take your car to Ford for 100k mile maintenance" or possibly something more serious?

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

your car is saying "hahaha, I'm gonna own you".... you can check the tripped code. push your trip od. button, hold it in, and start your car, still holding it in.... I forget what year they did this, maybe your's doesn't have it... I know mine does... it's a 2001. Anyway, you can check tripped codes with that menu.

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

No that will not read the code.

You need to do an OBD2 scan.

It can be anything except mileage tripped.

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

Try this to verify if the SES is on due to something as simple as not tightening the gas cap completely (yes, it will turn on the SES even when the problem or fault is corrected and will stay lit if no reset to the computer is done).

Disconnect battery for 2-5 minutes to reset system, reconnect battery and verify SES stays off after starting engine. If it becomes lit again....it definetely needs service and yes, you need an OBD-II scanner.

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

I had filled up a day or two before the code came on (yeah, i thought about that) and haven't filled up since, so I'm pretty sure it's not the gas cap.

I didn't know if Ford programmed them to trip at a certain mileage, just seemed like a thought.

I guess I'll take it to an Advanced and see what they have to say.

Yeah, Jimmy, that trick works for 99-04, but it won't read codes.

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

It doesn't trip at a certain mileage. You need OBD2 codes read. The cluster codes are for just the cluster.

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

EGR Flow Insufficient
EGR Flow Excessive

So tell me everything there is to know about the EGR Valve. All I know is that it puts exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber to lower temps and reduce NOx byproducts, thanks to Chiltons.

I know it's possible to delete this, but I'd rather not. How much would this be to fix, can I do it, etc.?

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

The pinpoint test procedure for the codes mentioned is of 35 - 45 steps that also require the use of a scanner. There are vacuum hoses/lines, exhaust pressure hoses (2), conectors, one pressure sensor, one vacuum solenoid, wiring, the EGR valve and the computer to check.

Since the codes are the opposite of one another, again....do a reset of the computer and verify if they are real codes first, you'll save time and money. Otherwise.....

Re: Service Engine Soon light on

I would replace the DPFE, they go bad a lot on 99-00, get one at ford or the autoparts store.
