Question Tires for drag racing 05'

I've got an 05' gt. I haven't raced on my local drag strip yet, but I'm itching to get out there. What rims and tires would you suggest? Just enough to get the job done correctly.

You can run on just your stockers. If you get real serious into it, buy some good drag radials later on down the road. Just normal steel belted radials will get ya fine man.

The new MT ET drag radial from what I have read is a nice option .Don't forget you will need a drive shaft safety loop.

You shouldn't need one for a while...not until you hit the tracks magic number which differs from track to track. With a stock 05 GT, you should be plenty fine without the loop.

Tires, the stockers will get you by just fine for the time being. If you do get serious, I would look at the MT's like GT-Eater said, but I wouldn't use those as your street tires. They tend to wear on the street real fast. Grip great at the track though. I have heard that they are only getting about 3-5k miles on the street. If you want streetable DR's, get the Nitto 555R's. They will last about 15k or so miles depending on your driving habbits. You will sacrifice some traction at the track though, but nothing super bad.

Re: Tires for drag racing 05'

Thanks for the info.

I'd never heard of a drive shaft safety loop before. Did a quick search. Thanks for the heads up, definetly sounds like something I need to get.

As far as racing on the stock tires vs drag, what kind of cost are we talking?
Does one type generally run more than the other?

I think I've got:
Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S P235/55ZR-17 98W B (41894) $139.00each

Ideally, I figured I'd have a different set of rims and tires for street use and drag use. I use my car everyday.

:yup: just use your stock wheels and put the radials on for the track

I put nitto 555Rs on my '02 GT, even around town it made a huuuuge difference in driving - car would hook between shifts and everything.. was a hella lot more enjoyable than street tires... Never got to use them at the track but shoulda been good for a .2 or so drop in my 60'...

They were also BETTER in the rain than my street tires were

Re: Tires for drag racing 05'

I posted this in the whieels/tire section but got no responses
------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking to get some drag tires for my 05' GT.

Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial
http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/s...et_radial.html

Is there a size that would fit my GT stock rims (17x8)? The P275/40R17?

Any suggestions on different rear rims to match with these tires?

Is is reasonable to change tires off a rim, or a better idea to just buy new/used rims for the drag tires?

Re: Tires for drag racing 05'

Seperate rims for the DR's is the easiest way to go.

Re: Tires for drag racing 05'

Nitto drag radials are the best. I have had both bfg's & nittos. The nittos last alot longer but I think the bfg's hook better. Just dont do too long of a burnout. I killed half my tires one day at the track.
