what would i need...

to build my own rear axle?

i found a 31 spline 8.8 diff on ebay, as well as 31 spline 5 lug axle shafts, 3.27 gears for same, and an aluminum rear diff cover. all for very decent prices

so what else would i need? differential housing i know, but any small parts or gaskets or anything?

thanks

Re: what would i need...

does it take a diff housing? (other than a stock 8.8) I dont think it does. I wouldnt buy used parts, probably better off with new 28 spline parts.

Re: what would i need...

unless you are putting down 300+ rwhp and tq with slicks 31 spline wont really be useful

Re: what would i need...

i doubt you would even need it if you totaly went out on the 6 (i mean unless you pushed like massive power 500 or so rwhp~)

I know 28 spline 8.8s that take 400rwhp with out issue... better safe than sorry though.

Re: what would i need...

you can find a used 8.8 that would work fine since its oem build. If you want 3.73s... thats more work just get it part by part, maybe a donnor rear end then gears and get it built.

Re: what would i need...

boo, ditch the 3.27's and go 3.73's, in some cases youll actually gain milage because your engine isnt lugging at speeds

you can buy an 8.8 housing and carrier, buy some axles, then buy a rear end rebuild kit, that comes with all the bearings, seals, shims, and all that, but i warn you, a rear end is VERY touchy and needs to be done very accuratly, or your gears could bind, whine, wear out fast, or make that annoying hum type sound at only certain loads...like both of my thunderbirds do

Re: what would i need...

no idea on his tranny gears. i know it's an auto and it has a 4200 tq'verter, but as for the tranny, you'd have to ask him
