Cool Re: rear gears

Don't forget that the higher the rear axle ratio, the faster your drivetrain parts will wear out also!

There is a price to pay for everything. If you want better acceleration, you'll pay the price in top speed, drivetrain wear, and fuel economy. I guess it all depends on what you really want or need the most, right?

But it would be really great if you could get a "super - overdrive gear" to replace your current 5th gear. That way you could have quick acceleration and good fuel economy on the highway.

I made an Excel spreadsheet to calculate rear axle gear and transmission ratios. (If anyone has Excel on their computer and would like a copy, give me a PM). By switching from a 0.73:1 5th gear to a 0.6:1 5th gear, you could get the same highway rpms at 70mph with a 3.73 rear axle as you would with the stock 2.73 rear axle.

All best,
Joe

Re: rear gears

Well I am a 17 year old high school student and I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of whats best for my car. I don't make much money, especially with it being basketball season and not working much, but I was curious as to if switching my car to 3.73 gears would be a good choice. I have true dual flowmasters and thats it as far as performance mods. Can anyone help me with pricing of the gears and if it is the best move to make. Also, I do travel on an interstate maybe 10 miles a week, but am planning on taking a trip shortly to Columbus (180 miles away). Thanks!

you have to think about if, from your situation. Is paying 200 bucks for gears, then paying for installation worth the extra power? If something were to happen to your car, would you have a descent amount of money saved to repair it?

knowing your highway travel and all, i'd say go for it.

Re: rear gears

if you can afford it, get gears. its a very nice mod, however, its a bit on the pricy side.
