Trac-Loc wheel hop

So when I burn out my trac-loc seems to make my car shake violently, the dash bangs around and whatnot... it even does this in the rain, it actually grips pretty well in the rain and wants to launch rather than slide.

I had new tires put on right after I got the trac-loc and I'm wondering if it's the tires or trac-loc itself that is causing the bouncing, is this normal? I thought the wheels were just supposed to spin free.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

I had the same issue when I installed 3.73s and a positrac differential in my old Camaro. Bad wheel hop, whenever I launched it hard. I swapped out the rear lower control arms to a boxed set, with polyurethane bushing. That fixed it right up. I'm not sure what all is different between the rear-ends in the 3rd generation Camaros, and whatever it is you've got, but it would be something worth looking into.

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

I had tubular BBK lower control arms on my '90 with a spool and it didn't wheel hop at all.

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

Ah ok, I have the stock suspension so I'm sure that's the problem, the weirs thing I that when I powerslide in second gear and let the rear swing out it slides fine with no hop at all, maybe it also depends on the road.

So tires aren't part of the equation here?

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

Is this the stock posi? Never had an issue with my car. I don't have any wheel hop. Maybe suspension is worn

No the stock rear end never hopped, I have a frpp trac-loc with 3.73 gears now and it does but my tires have been gripping a lot better now that they're worn in (about 10k miles) problem seemed to be more mild when the tires were new so I'm trying to figure out if its the tires or not

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

Wheel hop is usually an issue with suspension geometry or weak components/bushings. I've never heard of tires causing it.

Re: Trac-Loc wheel hop

Unless you flat spotted the tires. Then it would me in your suspension. You have the 8.8 solid rear? How many miles on your car?
