www.howstuffworks.com this will tell you quite a bit about it, but basically it acts as the clutch for an automatic car. a good aftermarket one will be lighter, multiply the torque thru the tranny at a higher ratio (more torque at the wheels) and will have a higher stall

basically they are almost good for about 0.5 off your 1/4 time and good amounts of torque at the wheels

get a Precision Industries Stallion with between a 2600-3000 stall. the higher the stall relates to the higher the mods on your car

Uh... Someone correct me if I'm wrong... But TQ convertors don't provide more measurable TQ at the wheels? I always heard they let you "get to your power faster" like gears. Is that not true? How much more torque do they provide, then?

correct, torque converters have a multiplucation factor. It's the same idea as gears. It accelerates you faster, but doesn't do more work(via torque) than before.

Question on the same (old) topic:

If you have two stock V6 stangs.. One is a manual, and one is an automatic. And you swap a 2800-3000 stall 9.5" TQ converter in the auto... Will they be the same speed? Will the auto be faster? Just how much drivetrain loss does a TQ converter make up for? Discuss amongst yourselves.

if you put a shift kit and a converter in the auto, it will beat the manual even if it has a short throw.

Yep, that is why you don't see many big time drag racers with straight drives, they run automatics.

That's badass.

Brandon: What'd you run with all your drivetrain mods?

that was with 8.8 w/ 4.10s and auburn posi
shift kit
2600 stall w/ tranny cooler.
alum driveshat
cai and UD pulley

I need to get gears and go to the track one of these days.

I've got a 3k Stallion, Alum. Driveshaft, Fairbanks competition shift kit, CAI, true duals w/ flowtech warlocks and h-pipe, and suspension, as far as performance mods go.

I have no idea what I run, but I have beat (3 times) my bosses 350 Buick Roadmaster that supposedly runs 14.9 stock. :chin:

i doubt youre in the 14s with those mods. are you single port or split?

if youre split, then its possible. if youre single, then its not. 4.10s will knock off about another .4 off your 1/4 time so that will help quite a bit too.

no one realizes how much an auto v6 can benefit from just drivetrain mods. you dont even have to get into the engine to be really running low 14s on a 99+ and high 14s on a pre99

I am splitport. 2002.

But yeah, I know what you mean. I did the tq converter and shift kit at the same time and it really woke up my car. Gears are somewhere next on my list... But I don't want to get them and have to get a chip.. And then reburn the chip over and over when I start doing major engine stuff.

I drive 38 miles each way. Yes. It will hurt your gas mileage. Yes. It is worth it. Your car will never drive the same again. I remember when my friend and I first installed it at his shop, I tried to drive like I usually would and all of the sudden I'm doing this huge burnout out of his parking lot with a ****-eating grin on my face. Well worth the money. Besides nitrous and gears, it's probably the best bang for your buck.

i think the converter is more of a bang than the gears IMO.

anyway, just get a speed-cal from www.dallasmustang.com and that will correct your speedo w/o having to get a chip. and you wont ever have to get the speed-cal reburned.

Speed cals are only available for 94-98 automatics.

subtract 0.1sec from that and that is what you should run with the converter if you get traction. but you have an 8.8 with slicks, right? put them on and you'll hook fine.
