Fox 8.8 into a sn95

I would like to upgrade the 7.5 2.73 open differential on my 1995 Mustang.
I know alot of people say just upgrade the 7.5 with a Detroit truetrac
and some gears. But I can get a 8.8 differential from an 88 GT with a tracloc
and 3.73 gears for $200. What needs to be done to do the swap?

Thanks

You will need different axles if you are wanting to do 5 lug rear wheels like you currently have. Not terribly expensive, and the 8.8 would be my choice depending on its shape.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

I have heard that sn95 7.5 5 bolt axles will work in the fox 8.8 differential.
I am just trying to verify that all that needs to be done is:
Remove drum brakes, 4 lug axles, and backing plates from fox 8.8 differential.
Then install backing plates, 5 lug axles, and disc brakes from sn95 7.5 into
the fox 8.8 differential.

With the addtion of the Eaton M90 supercharger the need to replace the
open differential has become most apparent.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

all 8.8s from their inception in 1984 to 1998 were identical. In 1999, they widened 1.5" but the mounting points and everything else were still the same.

To install a fox 8.8 on your car, just buy it, remove the drum brakes, 4 lug axles and install in your car. You can reuse your stock axles and brakes because they will bolt right up. Both use a 28 spline axle.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

you can use the axles from your 7.5 inch rear end as long as the rear end you are getting is not old (not sure when the cut off was, but 88 is fine)

you just need to take the 8.8 rear end and remove its axles and drum brakes. Then put on your axles and your brakes (sould have a mount to mount the axle bracket that holds the brake caliper on with. You will need to transplant the hard brake lines possibly as well, thats about it though...

takes axles out of 8.8 rear end
check and make sure the 8.8 rear end's bearings are in good shape
replace bearings if needed
check gears and what not and check all of the bolts
install your 7.5 inch rear gears
take off the 7.5 disk brakes including the bracket on the axle ends
install on new 8.8 rear
install 8.8

the actual installation is pretty easy, undo brakes, unbolt shocks and lower rear, jack up one side to push down on the other to pop out the springs, then unbolt LCA's and UCA's and the rear end will drop out. If you have ABS you will have to remove the braket for the brakes to get the thing off.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

Thanks for the response.

Time to do a differential swap.
I looking forward to go from a 2.73 open differential to a 3.73 TracLoc.

Thanks Again

youll love it on the 95... those 2.73's make them feel like turds. With the addition of that blower your new setup is going to blow your mind

I finished the M90 install last week and I just got an Xcal2 and a custom tune.
The Dyno run was 221rwhp 326rwtq. Believe me the 2.73 open differential is not cutting it.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

they must have swaped the 3.73 gears into the 8.8 because the stock ratio for a fox body is 2.73. That being said check the gears and if you can ride in the car first before you take it out check for gear whine and noice.

Re: Fox 8.8 into a sn95

Well the rear end is not in a car. It has a set of 3.73 Richmond Gears, Ford Tracloc and a set of Moser 4 lug fox axles. I took the cover off and looked at the gears they have no abnormal wear patterns. I guess there is atleast $200 worth of parts in there some where.
