Service Engine Soon light from hell.

Hey guys,

The thread title pretty much sums it up. I have brought it twice to Pep Boys and they cannot fix it. First they said it was a missing fuse so they replaced it. Service Engine Soon disappeared. A day later, it was back on. I took it back and they said it was a damaged air pump and the electrical wire was spliced. I brought it back a day later and I think they felt ashamed so they looked at it for 2 days with no charge.

They have concluded that the computer in the car has malfunctioned and the processor may need to be upgraded??? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you checked the obvious, like ensuring that the gas cap is on tight? More info would help you get a response. Any symptoms prior to the light coming on? Did you do any recent mods?

Yes, I have ensured the cap is on tightly. I bought the car about 2 weeks ago so it is news to me.

Pep Boys did say everything is functioning perfectly fine underneath the hood and the car drives great. No recent mods.

Does the warning light flash or stay on solid? Does it idle run smoothly?

Find out what code(s) are triggering the SES. Knowing so can really help diagnose the problem. The car may "seem" like it is running fine but the whole point of the CEL is to tell the driver when what the car should be doing, and what the car actually is doing, is not matching up.

Also, like others have asked, have you done any modifications?

Re: Service Engine Soon light from hell.

I don't think that the PCM itself is bad, otherwise your car probably wouldn't start, much less seem to run okay. The SES light means something is amiss with the emissions control systems on the car, which could be anything from a bad O2 sensor to a failed evaporator canister to the aforementioned gas cap not being screwed on at least 3-4 clicks. It would be worth your while to have it scanned at a reputable garage or at the local dealership; ignoring emissions control issues can and will lead to more expensive repairs down the road.

Without knowing the code, there is no way anyone on here is going to be able to help you.

Re: Service Engine Soon light from hell.

Ive had similar problems... And instead of spending tons on money on different parts that will do nothing to your car, take it to the dealer and get it diagnosed for about 130. Its the easiest and best way to go about it.

Ford is their thing and they'll tell u exactly whats wrong, if u decide to get it fixed... They'll deduct the diagnostic cost to the labor - or something close to that.

Good luck buddy!

Re: Service Engine Soon light from hell.

Before I'd start handing cash to a dealership, just go somewhere like autozone that will scan the computer for free and at least find out what the code number is. Might be something easy. Once you have the trouble code you can do some research on line and maybe figure it out. If not the dealership will still be there.
