Unhappy Front Bumper Estimate

Got an estimate for my front bumper today...$1000
Seems a little high to me, for the bumper and mounting piece and paint. The shop said that the paint Ford uses for my car is hard to do (something about the color or something)... which is why is was high... I don't know what you guys think about it? Going to get other estimate soon just wanted to know if this is amount range I'm going to pay.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

what kind of bumper are you getting is it a replacement or aftermarket? and you shouldnt need a bracket unless its not a direct replacement which just makes more work. it seems to me that its a little high. go to mrbodykit.com and see if you can get a better price, or americanmuscle.com

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

how much is the bumper costing you, just the bumper? and if its a stock replacement, you wouldnt need a bracket, it should just use the original parts, were you in a wreck?

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

yea 1000 is pretty pricey. have you looked at getting the cover from am, you can still get that painted. are you getting the paint done through a dealership, or a shop. r u getting the bumper through a dealership as well, cause you can find a perfectly good one from a junk yard for about 150, it might be scratched, or chipped, but if youre gonna paint it anyway, whats the difference.

Real high price. Try some aftermarket companies. I just bought one for my 98 that fits perfect for $50.00.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

Yah, that's ridiculous. I paid $600 for my GT rear bumper. That included the bumper, install, prep, paint, bake, everything. Plus, the paint was an exact match...for sonic blue!

Front bumpers covers are pretty popular. You can get reproduction covers for $99.

Do you need the front support too? Because those are only $40, so that estimate you got was pretty high.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

Here's a few sites as well:

Repro. O.E. cover
Mustang 99-04 Bumper Cover, Front, V6 at LRS - Same Day Shipping!

Front bumper support
Mustang 99-04 Front Bumper Support at LRS - Same Day Shipping!

Cheap GT front bumper on Amazon: may want a GT cover for fog lights in the future.
Amazon.com: Front Bumper Cover 99-04 Ford Mustang Gt Model with Fog Light Holes 99 00 01 02 03 04 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 w/ Fog Lamp Hole: Automotive

The biggest thing to remember is to get a urethane bumper, not fiberglass.
Urethane will flex and bend making install and fitting much easier, not to mention if you do collide with something, the bumper will give and flex rather than splinter and crack like fiberglass. Usually most OEM bumpers are urethane, but you never know, so keep that in mind.

Also, the junkyard can be your friend. A mustang with a wrecked rear and a perfect front is a great donor car, and will save you a ton of money. Laser red shouldn't be too hard to find at a junk yard. I'd do a thorough check in my area before spending the money at a shop.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

Thx guys. I wasnt goin to pay that before I checked around. I really appreciate those who listed sites, saves the time of searching for them myself . The reason he is pricing it high is because the mounts are bent and he is goin to have to bend the colors together.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

On a side note the only difference between gt and v6 bumper is the fog light places are cut-out right?

Yah that's the only difference. If you plan on getting fog lights and the price of the bumper is the same, I'd go for the GT bumper, it'll save you having to cut out the grids.

Well, I forgot about blending to make the colors match right. That paint guy doesn't sound like an idiot...the best way to make the front look right is to blend the bumper, fenders, sometimes even the hood to make the color match. If he just painted the bumper, you could see the color difference when looking at the points where the bumper ends and meets the fenders, same with the hood.
So, really that price isn't too high then...considering all the labor and parts involved, maybe even on the low side.

There are plenty of places that will just paint your bumper, overcharge you for it, not even mention blending, and send you on your way, so this seems like a better place.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

Prob goining to need a good buff job on the rest of the car to help it also. The lazer red seams to fade in random areas.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

your laser red paint is a PAIN to match and it probably wont look right if the car's paint is faded at all.. and in order to make it look right they might have to paint some of the fenders or hood~ just FYI.

The bump itself shouldnt be much, an 03 cobra bumper is like 375.00~ complete with everything (I think at least).

forlights are like 200 or so, bezels are like 40, grill delete that you must use is like 20-50

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

That seems about right for that color. It is in fact a very difficult color to match/blend. They will need to paint much more than your bumper to get it to look right. Not to mention, the color alone is a pricey color as it is a 3 stage color if I remember right. It's not just a shoot one color, lay clear, and done. It has 2 or 3 layers before the clear.

So, $1000 is about right for parts, labor, and paint as they will need to come up your hood and fenders a good bit to blend it in.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

I know my Redfire paint is not shot in a 3 stages, I dont think Lazer red is either, but its kinda like a 3 stage somehow~ I am just going by what place that painted my hood/bumper told me. Its hard to match due to the flake in it etc etc.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

The orginial Laser Red is a 3 stage paint, it has the pearl effect in the paint appearing red and at some lights maroon to deep purple along body lines. It is pricey, Ford then went with a new 2 stage Laser Red to help cut down labor, but it is still kind of pricey. Laser Red was dropped and Redfire took its place, the 2 colors may look close but under the light they are 2 different shades of red.

Isn't redfire more of a redish-orange color? I could be wrong, I just remember seeing pics of a GT that was said to be redfire in the sun and thought it had a orange effect along certain lines of the car.

redfire is a brighter red and has more gold flake in it from what ive seen. Laser red is deeper in the red color.

Redfire is what is in spector's sig and gallery and in my gallery. It is a bit more red than laser red like spec said. I've never seen any orange in my car, just a darker red.

The orangey red that I'm aware of is the Performance Red...it has a definite orange tint to it. But redfire, I've never seen it in my car....if anything I'd say redfire was maroonish where laser is more dark red.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

Ok, maybe it was more of a gold flake. This was probably a couple years ago, so it's fairly faint in my mind...I just remember the depth in the paint at certain points, like around the fender and quarter panels. It's like the depth and color alteration of sonic blue when you look at it in the sun up close.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

I looked at some pics of redfire mustangs, and it couldn't have been redfire. Like you said it has that maroonish color to it.

I wish I could find those pics again, it was on autotrader and was a 01-04 GT.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

With the orangish tint, it almost sounds like it could have been a Liztick red from Saleen....but that would be weird to see on a GT as it is really pricey and saleen is a bit of a PITA to get their color codes from.

Re: Front Bumper Estimate

That could be, but like you said, it'd be strange to be on a GT. But then again, stranger things have happened...you see all sorts of different things people have done to these cars...Mach 1's with v6 seats, GT's with saleen paint jobs, etc.
