Exclamation 01 GT auto gear issues

Hey all-

Just picked up a 01 Mineral Grey GT auto, and the previous owner changed the gearing, and it is unknown what it is. The car came with a Diablo Predator tuner also, no manual of course.

I need to change the gears-seems when they switched it took away the OD, which is what I need for the daily freeway commute. I was thinking of going back to stock, or anything that will give me a low RPM at cruising speeds. Currently at around 70 MPH it runs 2700-2800 RPM. It seems to shift out of first at or under 10 MPH, which is really annoying. Can anybody help me with what stock gearing is, and what would be recommended for good mileage and low RPMs at freeway speeds?

Called local dealers, and am getting quotes of $1400-$2500 to go back to stock gearing, which seems like a raping if I ever saw one. Looks like I can get the gears and new bearings for $250-$275-I can't see $1200 in labor costs..am I wrong? I am mechanically challenged, so there is no way I can do it.

Is anybody in Phoenix that can recommend someone to me? Any help and input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 01 GT auto gear issues

your od is still there. you will need to find out what gear ratio is in your car now, then buy 3.27 gears for an 8.8 rear end and have a shop install then no more than 300 bucks for a quality job.
then you can calibrate your computer for the new gear ration with a speedcal or just go back to stock settings with the diablo programme

Re: 01 GT auto gear issues

gearing doesnt effect how many transmission gears you have just how fast the rear tires turn in any given gear that you are in. If your over drive does not work (your 4th tranny gear) then you have tranny issues, not rear end gear issues.

See if you can find out what gears are in the rear, and is your speedo correct?

Re: 01 GT auto gear issues

Sorry-Let me rephrase that...I still have O/D, it just seems like I no longer have it because of the increased RPM's at cruising speeds. My speedo seems to be correct, and I believe it was calibrated with the Diablo.
I need to find a shop that can do it locally without screwing me! Anybody in the Phoenix area recommend someone?? Thanks for all your responses.

If I was closer...I'd trade rear ends with ya. Take you back to stock gearing lol. See if anyone from your area wants a rear end with the gears you have and if they have their stock one. It'll be cheaper and easier to just trade rear ends.
