Question 94 Auto Transmission

My 94 auto is rattle/shaking....seems to be around 1100-1300 RPM @ 55-60 km/h. I have never run into anything like this on any vehicle have owned and no one I know has any idea what it is or why it would be doing it.
Anyone here help me out? It gets really annoying and since trying build up a nice car for my wife, I sure would like get it solved before something serious happens.

Thx in advance

It's acting very similar to DEG in the following post:

Difference is, his is a standard where mine is auto but the shaking/rattle is very similar.

Re: 94 Auto Transmission

if your mechanic knowledgeable, your harmonic balancer could be bad. if you dont know what that is, when your crankshaft turns, it turns your crank pulley, and just behind that is your harmonic balancer. its a simple fix, it might cost you around 180 if you go with an underdrive pulley. you can find them at v6mustangstuff.com. and if you were to go with the u/d pulley, then you would need to get an overdrive pulley for the alternator. reason being is because the u/d pulley will slow down all your other equipment parts that are connected to your serpentine belt. but if you want to go with a stock replacement, it will probably be around 110-130.

Re: 94 Auto Transmission

Thx, I know exactly what the harmonic balancer is. I replaced one on my 84 Camaro when I had it years ago. It is an easy fix. I think @ that time it cost me $80 for that one. What will the OD pulley do for the 3.8? Anything that is really noticeable? If not then just going keep stock because this motor has a rattle in the bottom end and am thinking upgrading in the summer to a 4.2, possibly a 5.0

Thx v6stang04

Re: 94 Auto Transmission

Prob the torque converter. My car did the same thing with the 2.73 gears when it shifted under a load. When I up graded to the 3.73's the shift points are alot higher even going slow & the shaking stopped. Add some trans-x rear end friction modifer to the trans & it will help. The torque converter chatters when it engages kinda like new brakes on unturned rotors. The Mac under drive pullies are cheap, around $60 from mac with free shipping. They help a little not bad for the price.
