im needing to get new front tires, and i looked at the size that i need, on the tire it says 245/40zr18. now does that mean that is the only tire that will fit on my rim, cause on am i found the same size, just w/o the zr part, will those fit, or would i need the zr part, and what does zr stand for?

Re: tires

ZR is just the speed rating.

For an 18x9 inch wheel I would recommend at least a 265/35. I personally run a 275/35-18 on my 18x9's on the front and a 295/35-18 on my 18x10 rears.

Re: tires

+1 ^^ the speed rating is just what you want the tire to go speed wise~

Re: tires

The only caution I would throw out is that if you are not replacing all 4 tires, it is best to stay in the same general 'speed' category. There are different letters that describe the speed rating and the "general" rule of thumb is that you can deviate 1 speed rating without much problem. The higher speed rated tires will have different handling characteristics (e.g. stiffer sidewalls) in addition to a higher speed limit. If you start to mix and match speed ratings, you may see some squirrly handling.

For example, I would not recommend a "S" tire (112 mph) mated with a "Z" tire (168mph).
