What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

So I really want to do this, but would rather buy FRPP gears. I've contacted Anderson racing and they informed me that Ford Racing no longer made gears for the 7.5" axle. I've check on Jegs who has their own and I'm aware of Richmond and Motive, but I've heard that they all whine/make some noise. I just wanted to get opinions on what brand of gears I should purchase for my modification that I've been long awaiting to do.

Thanks.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

You might want to check around for any backstock of FRPP gears. I too have heard they no longer manufacture these.

If I had to choose between Richmond and Motive it would be Motive.

yea keep a look out, call tousleyfordparts.com and see if they have any. There are sets out there... just gotta find them. Remember, ranger's also have 7.5's so you can check for those.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Tousley does not. I PM'ed them 2 years ago for people on here to get them prices on t-loks and all and they are the ones that informed me that ford is no longer making 7.5" gears....they do not have any 7.5" gears. They do have t-loks though for a good price.

if you can get the tloks for less than 200 that would be a way to make some money down the road no doubt.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

I've seen a few sets on EBAY used from rangers/SVO's/Mustangs that look to be in good shape. I have 120K miles on my car now and don't mind buying used as long as the parts are of good quality. Do any of you know the part number I should be looking for ? I saw one on ebay (for 3:73) that had 11x41 teeth or something like that. Does that sound right?

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

only issue with used is gear whine/noise as if they have a bad wear pattern... they will never be right so its a gamble.... they will still work perfectly fine just make noise.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Ok well then Spec you suggest a new gear huh? I'm leaning towards this kit from JEGS only because it includes everything for the install and then some. I'll also be putting in the t-lock if I decide to do this mod over the suspension upgraded.
Thanks everyone for their input.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

If you are planning on installing the gears yourself I hope you have invested in some high dollar equipment. I've set gears in a few rear ends with help and still wouldn't attempt it on my own.

BTW, gear whine isn't horrible, just get louder exhaust and it fixes the issue.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

With 120k miles I'd consider a bearing kit if the JEGS one doesn't have it.
American Muscle has a nice kit for the 7.5" rearend.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Yea I was expecting to get the whole kit put together, I don't skimp out on important things I think I will go with the MOTIVE GEARS. Very solid reviews through AM and it should leave some money left over from my tax return...haha.

Ohh yea and my exhaust is pretty loud especially for a V6.

I want to say 3 will be enough for the install, though having a 4th around wouldn't hurt.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Nice sounds like a plan to me I'll keep you guys posted. I'm assuming blackonblack you have an auto like I? I want to go with 4:10's, but I do about 50% or more highway, thus I think I'll stick with 3:73's, besides eventually i would like a T5 to replace the slushbox.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Three quarts of gear oil is way too much. Check your owner's manual; I'm thinking 2-3 pints is more like it. A good rule of thumb is to fill the pumpkin until the oil level is just to the bottom of the fill hole; you should be able to stick your finger in the oil just below the threads. BUT, check your owners manual for the proper amount!

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

there are two issues that cause whine, the make up of the gears (which can cause more whine etc) and the installation. Many installers simply blame it on the gears when they are the ones that didnt take the time or dont have the knowledge to install them correctly. Just make SURE you do your research on who you let work on your car... and you really should do a Tlok as its the SAME amount of work .... so why not... dont let them charge you much extra (like 40 bucks or 50 bucks) to put a tlok in with gears as any more is a clear sign of a rip off... they have to remove the stock differential and remove the stock ring gear from it... so instead of bolting it up to the old one they simply put the new one in its place... I mean you could stand to the side and swap the parts out and they would never know lol.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

Yea I figured it would be easy and that they would do that. Today I had a loud squeeky noise coming from the engine so I stopped by Ford though and got some bad news. Camshaft syncronizer is bad = $537 later and won't be ready until 4-5pm. Sucks, but I guess that has to be done first. Not too big of a setback, but a setback none the less.

2 quarts & some trans x modifier. Get it from autozone. The modifier comes in a tube that looks like hand cleaner. Its all in the same section on the shelf.

Re: What brand of Ring and pinion gears to buy?

$289 is crazy expensive for gears, but then if you want actual Ford Racing, you'll pay for it. I'd say go for 3.90 gears if you're concerned about highway mileage, but I haven't seen them for the 7.5".

But then I've heard from several people that the average loss in mpgs with 4.10's is .5-1.5mpg, so that's not a bad trade off for the performance gain.

The motives in my old 7.5 were installed for 2 years and never whined once, but then I guess I caught traction one day and they made a bunch of metal banging noises.
