cigarette lighter trouble

I could use a little advice on how to fix my cigarette lighter on my 2001 mustang. my cigarette lighter next to my gear shift has never worked since i bought the car, so i checked out the fuses ans sure enough, the one for the lighter was blown. so i replaced it, but when i went to use the lighter, it blew the fuse again. so obviously the problem is that there is a short somewhere or something. What should i do? is this a common issue?

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

Never had an issue in my 02, but the cobra has been having the same issues. I just don't use the one by the shifter and only use the one in the armrest. Kinda annoying at times but it doesn't bother me.

i think the universe is trying to tell you something (dont smoke) haha

as far as im aware, its not a common issue. might want to just check the wires and see if there is anything fishy going on in there. maybe check the voltage.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

Yah check the wiring for sure. If you replaced a fuse once and it blew again, then something else is wrong. Sometimes manufacturers group circuits into one fuse, so if you had other problems (fog lights, cruise control etc.), I'd say look into that but its sounds isolated.

Could be a bad recepticle as well, a bare wire could be in contact with it causing blown fuses.

You can plug any DC 12 volt accessory into the cigarette outlet...just take out the cigarette lighter and it's basically the same as the one in the center console.

That seems to be the one that has trouble first.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

Check for any small particles or metallic trash that could have fallen into the slot.

Good chance it is the fuse. Do as w_nixon did and swap in a new fuse...then check the lighter to see if it blows the new fuse.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

Make sure you are replacing it with the correct fuse. Just because there was a 5A fuse in there don't assume that it is 5A. Check the owner's manual and see what the required fuse should be.

If it is the correct fuse then I'd inspect the cigarette lighters/accessory outlets then. Make sure there isn't a coin stuck inside or any piece of metal which would complete the circuit and cause the short (fuse to blow).

Both the shifter outlet and the one in the center concole (in the arm rest) should be on the same fuse, so if that fuse goes then both outlets shouldn't function.

Also do you have any additional electronic accessories which are hardwired to the car? Even plugging multiple things into one socket will cause a big draw in current and blow the fuse.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

Always check and make sure there isn't a penny or dime or sumtin down there. When i replaced fuse after fuse after fuse I bought a cig lighter from auto zone or sumtin and It worked then I stopped using it cuz it gets ash everywhere. Just get a bic.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

I had a dime stuck in mine for the longest time near the shifter and never knew. Once I finally saw the dime it must have taken an act of congress to get the dime out. My lighter has been inop since. I continue to use the outlet in the center console at this point.

Re: cigarette lighter trouble

I would just buy the BIC (I'm partial to them, so don't listen to me.) if it's just the lighter that doesn't work. If the whole outlet doesn't work then try checking the wires.

I like BIC too until I got my Ford Zippo. Also don't carry a white BIC, that's a no-no

lol i know what you mean you supposed to stay about 10 feet away from someone using a red bic in this area. I was the same way when i got my jack daniels zippo but for some reason it just needs more lighter fluid like every day and I don't use it that much.
