Exclamation WOOT!

Just raced a 5 speed 99-04 style GT from a dig through third in my 4.0, neck and neck the entire time! I launched pretty well considering I usually have a 2.6 60' and had a car length on him through first and second and like an idiot I hit the rev limiter in second and he caught upbut when I hit third we continued neck and neck, I had a feeling I could hang with/mildly take those 04 and earlie GTs, now I know

by the way it was a roush stage 2, so it at least had an air intake

Re: WOOT!

Very nice...that means 94-98 GT's won't be able to touch you, and auto 99-04's shouldn't be much of a problem either.

Those 4.0's really respond to basic bolt ons with a tune.

Re: WOOT!

I know a local guy with a 98 5 speed and he refuses to race me, lol... He won't like this story one bit... Having said that, Im pretty sure most older GTs are pretty modded out

Re: WOOT!

Yah even lightly modded those 96-98 4.6L's are dogs. Unless they did the PI swap, I'd say you still have a decent chance against a manual.

Re: WOOT!

That's true, but there's something about the pushrods that sounds way too amazing, it almost makes me feel bad when I win haha

Pushrod engines in mustangs went to the wayside in 1996 (for the v8..) They went to OHC..

Then again in 2005 with the v6

Re: WOOT!

Lol! Didn't know that, I dunno why the 99-04s sound so much better than the 05+ then... I swear they sound like the 98 and earlier models

Manual with 3.73 gears and Pirelli P zero tires, it launches pretty hard

ya know there are really way too many variables to be honest, the cars are so close that it's all about who launches the most efficiently, I did at one point beat an 08 GT 5 speed, it was some 16 year old in his moms car and he span for about a second and a half off the line so guess what- I beat him to 100 then he backed off, doesn't mean my car is faster than his

Yea the street racing & track racing are totally different. I could out run a friend of mine who had a LT1 z-28 that ran 13.40's & my 91 Lx was running 14.00's. He would put a few on me @ the track but it was a different story on the street.

Re: WOOT!

i feel like im really good at launching off the line. my only problem is sometimes i go pedal to the floor too fast. but i dont make that mistake often

my car has a lot of weight. with the replica rims, pipes?, and subs. i just put these subs in, X2 10" and i could feel a noticeable difference

To help you launch in an auto...keep your foot applied on the brake, and rev the car up to about 1500-2000 rpms (I can't remember exactly, haven't done it in a while), and hold it. You'll have to feel out which rpm range is the best with your car - having 4.10's and wider wheels will change it -

You don't want the car to burnout or overly spin when you release the brake. You want the car's rear to dip down and just take off. It'll help get the car moving a little bit better, similar to launching with a manual minus the clutch.

Re: WOOT!

I would think you'd want to leave it in D since you're tuned and have taller gears. The improved shift points and firmness should make sure auto solid.

I never liked that manually shifting 1st and into 2nd crap with these slushbox transmissions we have. Just put it in D and go, lol. It is harder on the trans. if you don't shift it right or hit it too late etc. I wouldn't do it excessively.

I agree, mine shifts 100 times better & firmer leaving it in D with the o/d button off.

Re: WOOT!

The tune is what changes the automatics. Those shift points really affect the car.

Re: WOOT!

in the mornings when i drive. my shift points are faster, like when i got the tune. but in the afternoon it feels like a driving stock shift points. idk, any reason for this? anything to do with the engine being cold?

Do you have a seperate trans cooler. If not that will help keep the trans consistent.

Re: WOOT!

My 2002 V6 auto does have a stock Trans cooler and I would assume that yours does too, helps cool the transmission fluid (looks like a mini-radiator that is mounted on your radiator with a couple metal lines goin to and from it). Perhaps the car shifts better in the morning because it might be cooler and warmer in the afternoon which can possibly alter the shift points. As far as shifting from 1-2-D don't do it because you can't shift faster than a computer and with your tunes your car should shift better anyway so don't risk it.
